Bad number for NYC. Our goal should be going below the 300 mark, instead we are hovering in the 300s.

Ideally, LA would be under 200 and NYC would be under 300 and Chicago would be in that range as well. Lets see what the new year brings

4.1 million metro and a 2 million city population with just 23 murders. All while being minutes from the US border. That is awesome.

Tijuana had its worse year ever. The city is going through a building boom right now and was trying to rehab its reputation. The murder rate was 45 per 100,000.

Quote:
Tijuana Homicides Reach Record Level In 2016
By Jean Guerrero

Tijuana was the site of more than 900 homicides in 2016, Baja California’s attorney general said Monday. That makes 2016 the most violent year in Tijuana's history.

The previous record was 844 killings in 2008. The increase in killings is due, in part, to fighting between the rising Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel for control of the cross-border drug trade in Tijuana.

The city has been struggling since 2008 to rebuild its reputation around culinary arts and innovation in manufacturing. Rising violence could represent a setback in terms of Tijuana's ability to attract tourists and investors.

The "Comunidad de Madrid" (population 6.45 million) finished with 39 murders, or a rate of 0.6 per 100,000:

Los homicidios suben un 30% en la región durante el año pasado

This is actually an increase from the 30 murders in 2015, which was the lowest rate in Madrid's modern history.

I haven't seen official year-end figures yet, but through December 26th, Minneapolis had 37 murders in 2016. Based on a 2014 city population of 407,207, this is a rate of 9.1 per hundred thousand.

As of 12/26/2015, Mpls murders totaled 50
As of 12/26/2014, Mpls murders, totaled 32

Couldn't find data on St Paul or Columbus, OH

SF is at 3 now, after a group of dudes beat an old man to death in the tenderloin. The cops seem to think it might have been a robbery gone bad.

SJ is at 2, after a triple shooting at a taqueria in east San Jose.

Oakland is at 1, after a shooting in West Oakland.

It's not that weird when we're only one week into the year. Murders often come in spates, and there's a lot of time left for people to kill each other. Oakland will probably have the most murders, as usual. Though SF has ended the year with more murders in the past:

SF murders:
2005 - 96
2004 - 88

Oakland murders:
2005 - 93
2004 - 83

Of course Oakland still had the higher rate.

538 article about 2016 murder in US cities:

Quote:
U.S. Cities Experienced Another Big Rise In Murder In 2016
By Jeff Asher

Murder almost certainly increased substantially in the U.S. in 2016, one year after it rose at its fastest pace in a quarter century.

The government won’t release official 2016 crime statistics for another nine months. But data from individual police departments indicates that murder rose in most of the country’s biggest cities in 2016, in some cases dramatically. Because a large share of murders take place in big cities, a substantial increase there means that the country’s overall murder total almost certainly rose as well.

Using a combination of official police data and local media reports, I was able to collect murder counts through at least November 2016 for 73 of the 83 U.S. cities with populations above 250,000, and partial data for all but one of the rest. The counts are preliminary and could be subject to change before they are submitted to the FBI for inclusion in the Uniform Crime Report that will be published in September.

Major U.S. cities with the highest 2016 murder rates

1. St. Louis - 59.3
2. Baltimore - 51.2
3. Detroit - 44.9
4. New Orleans - 44.5
5. Cleveland - 35.0
6. Newark - 33.0
7. Memphis - 31.9
8. Chicago - 27.9
9. Kansas City - 26.4
10. Atlanta - 23.9

Rates are estimates based on latest available data.
