The building still looks much the same, except that the corner steps have been filled in. I think I went back to 2014 to get this view with the sun on the correct side. On the left is the old pylon from the Ambassador Hotel. The sign on the Embassy Apartments is currently missing an "s".

In the early 1980's, IBM sold the building to Thrifty Corporation, parent company of Thrifty Drug Stores and other business. Thrifty renovated the ground floor, placing a drug store, a Big 5 sporting goods store, and a Crown Books around the corner. I worked in the building from 1989 until 1995-96 when Thrifty donated the building to the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese, the present owner.

Could not figure out how to post the photos at the above links, maybe someone on the board can do it. I think we've seen these or similar images before, it's James Dean gassing up the Spyder on 9-30-55, at Ventura Blvd. and Tyrone in Sherman Oaks. The 2nd image was taken at the site a couple of years ago, the photographer holds up the Dean photo with the site as it looks today for comparison.

Revisiting this now as an alert to anyone who wants to see the bldg, pump island and gas station canopy, as they will soon be demolished. The station, which has been used as a flower shop for many years, will be torn down along with the adjacent bldgs. I live in the area and drove by today. The various businesses, which include the Handy J Car Wash, are all now closed. Apparently a Whole Foods market will occupy the site.

An additional noir element is that this was the station that the Manson family killers stopped at to wash off the blood following the carnage up on Cielo Dr.

Another satisfied customer. Jimmy had finished shooting George Stevens’ “Giant”– notice his hairline was shaved by the studio to play the older, slightly balding
Jett Rink. With the film in the bag, Jimmy was now free to race. Hard to know exactly the context of this pic, we know he picked the Spyder up for the last time
from the Competition Motors service department on Vine Street (opposite the Hollywood Ranch Market). Still a sad, compelling story after all these years.

Spyder after Jimmy had enough seat time to insure the Porsche had sufficient miles on it to qualify for their intended class at Salinas. Of course, none of that will
happen. We're looking north on Vine Street at La Mirada Avenue. Jimmy is parked at the curb in front of Competition Motors at 1219 N. Vine Street, the building is
long gone. But that building in the background with the sidewalk awnings is still there doing business as a pawn shop. The Hollywood Ranch Market is
across the street to the right.)

Regarding the Squire station wagon with the trailer, apparently the original plan was to tow the Spyder. But Dean wanted to put some miles on the car....a fateful decision, maybe he survives the crash if he's in the wagon...or they don't make the same time and are not even at the crossroads when the truck was there...you can go on and on with the possibilities.

The Squire was driven by legendary stunt driver Bill Hickman, a close friend of Dean's. Hickman was the driver of the killer's car Steve McQueen pursued in the great car chase sequence in "Bullitt". Hickman's quiet gesture of clicking his seatbelt shut is one of the most iconic scenes in film. Pretty noirish, too.
