Not a chance. This should come as a surprise to no one.

This is probably the easiest way to deal with this, at least in the short term.

In any event, what Selinger wants doesn't matter. He won't be in power when this comes to fruition. Regardless of how its sold - I just hope the PC's are as pro-pot as the NDP, and do not try to throw up roadblocks for even just selling it in MB, let alone who sells it.

And just so we are clear - I am in full support of absolute privatization of Alcohol and pot sales in MB. I just don't think it's going to happen.

Obviously the NDP won't do it, and the rural PC base probably don't care to see increased access to either product.

Our only hope are the Liberals. But they are basically a political basket case at the provincial level.

Agreed. I think the number one "fear" some people have is the job issue but my view is:

a) clearly there will actually be more net jobs in the end
b) retail sales is not something that should be paying $20-30 an hour with full benefits, all with public money. it makes me cringe.

They doubled the highways budget in 2005 from 2005 to over $250M. They almost doubled it again in 2007 to $400M. They almost doubled it again in 2011. It now sits at $700M. They've been dealing with it for a long time, and the results are evident if you regularly drive provincial highways. There is still a long way to go. I don't like the PST increase, but it's necessary.

I am completely undecided on how to vote. Manitoba is better than it was 20 years ago, but it's not better than it was 5 years ago.

I'm just speculating, but I'm guessing the Liberals will gain considerably here among most posters with the wave of enthusiasm garnered by Trudeau's victory.

I remain humbly conflicted in my choice at this point as well...

It is if you care about Manitoba's prosperity. Cuts must be made, the bloated government reduced, and spending monitored. The NDP simply taxes its way out of any situation, and relies on transfer payments. Pallister is not Filmon.

The reality is many people will never be happy no matter who is in government. Filmon was right to make some cuts, but became too tight with the purse strings.

I am still undecided between Rana and Brian.

Seriously though, I get that the NDP may be past their best before date, but I certainly wouldn't regard this as a no brainer... Mainly because of who is at the helm of the PC party.

Pallister was at odds with Filmon. A Pallister government would not resemble a Filmon government.

I've always been most at home in the Liberal party, and that's why I've voted NDP in Manitoba as long as I've been able to vote (they're orange liberals here). I'll make my decision during the campaign. My gut tells me (it's been right every election for the last few years provincially and federally) that the NDP will just eek this out, despite their weak record under Sellinger.

Lol, the NDP is not even attempting to make the province less reliant.

I think the Liberals will make a triumphant return to the political landscape of Manitoba. Either the PC or Liberals forming a minority with the other as official opposition would be ideal IMO.

There are 4 major spenders:

Health, Education, Infrastructure, and Family Services.

Where are you going to cut? Health and education are already on shoestring budgets (per capita) compared to what they were a few years ago (I was on a Hospital board in rural Manitoba for a few years, so I know). Infrastructure spending is finally taking a chunk out of Manitoba's worse than national infrastructure deficit. Family Services is a hornet's nest that is going to be terrible to clean up, but there may be some modest savings to find there, eventually.

Seriously, there aren't many places that the PCs could realistically cut.
