We probably shouldn't have trucked off those burial mounds.

St. Louis was definitely one of the most hurt cities by urban renewal. Largely because it is one of America's oldest major cities and being so landlocked didn't get the same wave of new immigrants coastal cities receive. Corrupt and inept leadership, the city/county split, and overtly racist policies also hurt St. Louis. No excuse for St. Louis to be so economically stagnant and a lot larger by now. From the mid 19th century until the 1960s St. Louis was often spoken in the same breath as cities like Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia etc. in terms of economics and influence. Now we are slipping into even further irrelevancy.

Wow, I could stare at these kinds of photos all day. So much was lost in St. Louis. Those assholes standing on the roof watching their city get torn down in the 50s; Id like to have a time machine and push them off said roof. In fact, Id like to round up all the modernists in the 50s-70s that destroyed cities like St. Louis and put them all on a desert island far away from any urbanism so they couldnt touch it.

Tornado of '96. I believe St. Louis has been hit by more tornados than any other city in the US. This is probably because it's the been the largest - the longest - the closest to Tornado Alley, if that makes any sense.
