This is rough (a simple median of 27 pictures... not trying to align any better than just assuming my tripod was still), but it's the best I could do quickly:

The most recent recertification, which followed a $500 million renovation, upgraded the building’s energy systems, resulting in a 20 percent energy consumption reduction.

Here is a peculiar observation.

This building is said to include 423,638 square meters of floor space.

Few other super-talls exceed it.

It’s only exceeded by the Ping An Center in total space.

Anyone know what is the deal with the western antenna? The top most segment has been taken off several months ago (late Nov/early Dec) and now the tower has a similar configuration like the Hancock where the eastern antenna is taller than the western one, albeit with less of a difference in height on the Sears Tower.

Skydeck in mid 1970's.

Here are some pictures and a video of the Sears Tower Skydeck from the mid 1970's that are worth sharing here.

It doesn't seem possible that exactly 25 years ago today I registered the searstower.org domain name and launched the Sears Tower fan page. It's been quite a journey watching how both the Internet and Sears Tower has evolved and transformed since that time. Cheers!

The Chicago Tribune just published a retrospective of Sears Tower's topping out on May 3, 1973, including many rare photos of construction.

Building Goliath: the making of the Sears Tower

"Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, opened in 1973, though construction was not completed until 1974. The skyscraper was the world’s tallest building until 1998, when it was surpassed by a building in Malaysia. The 110-story tower has seen many changes in residents over the years, and in 2009 a new glass ledge was introduced on the building's 103rd floor."

Here are a couple of photos from the article (Credit: Charles Osgood and John Bartley)

The Tower Bums sing "She's the Tallest Rock" during the topping out ceremony.

Steelworkers raise the final white beam with over 12,000 signatures into place.

Sears (Willis) Tower made the front page of the Chicago Tribune yesterday: "Still a Trendsetter at 50".

"Kathleen McCarthy, global co-head of Blackstone Real Estate, said she’s confident Willis Tower will continue thriving. Her company plunked down $1.3 billion for the building in 2015 and then spent more than $500 million modernizing it. 'At 50, we all need a freshening up,' said Todd Heiser, co-managing director of Gensler, the renovation’s lead architectural firm."

You can read the full article online here.

Thankfully, I managed to get a copy of the paper at the nearby Walgreens before they were sold out.

Ugh - Love this building.

I was in Dubai back in December, and did a quick ride up to their obs deck. It was not special, but at the end you walk through a museum-like section that documents the construction of the Burj. Seeing SOM's name and Chicago being referenced there made my heart warm as it showcased how the monumental architectural and engineering achievements in Chicago during the 20th century created ripples across the world we see to this day.

🥳 Happy 50th Birthday Sears Tower!

Sears Tower was topped out exactly 50 years ago today, earning it the title of world's tallest building. Over the course of the past half-century, it has become a signature Chicago landmark and a focal point of the city skyline.

Did you know?

Even though Sears Tower is no longer the world's tallest building, it still holds plenty of other records to this day.
  • Tallest steel-framed skyscraper in the world.
  • Tallest building with all-black cladding in the world.
  • Tallest building with twin antenna masts in the world.
  • Highest rooftop of any office building in North America.
  • Most occupiable floors of any skyscraper in North America.
  • Most usable floor space of any skyscraper in North America.
  • Highest public observation deck in the United States.
And another fun fact is that SearsTower.org is the longest-running enthusiast site of any skyscraper in the world.
