I'm very excited about the Ickes redevelopment, looks great. I actually wasn't expecting something this dense anyway, nor any solid plans anytime soon, so Ill take it.

Ickes proposal looks great!
South Loop is in the middle of a HUGE transformation. The next decade is going to be busy with Riverline, Ickes, Rezko and all the buildings proposed near grant park.

It would be a nice contrast if it wasn't such a piss poor attempt at art deco

It's not really deco at all, it's early Modernism. I agree it is a nice building but Holy under utilization of space Batman. This has more in common from a design perspective with buildings like 1 Prudential or PSFS in Philly than any Deco building.

Yeah, it's modernist. When it first opened in the 1950s, as the headquarters of Morton Salt, it wasn't so out of place and surrounded by as many tall buildings. I like it but it's time to go.

Exhibit

Seeing the whole composition of the building from the street makes a big difference with this one. The hue of the tower brick looks better when evaluated with the tones of the base bricks. The tower itself also has a crisp sculpted look and is ruggedly handsome, especially when viewed obliquely. I was wary of the final product before, but now that the base is nearly finished, it's looking like it's going to end up as a great finished product, especially at street level.

I think the finishing touches are still improving this one as you say. The balcony glass is really nice and making a huge impact as it goes in as well. This is a very textured building and the contrasts between the voids and grid of brick is the whole point of the design.

3Eleven on the Rise in Chicago's Bustling River North District
Quote:
Progress at the site of 3Eleven (formerly 311 W Illinois), within the heart of the bustling River North district in downtown Chicago, began in earnest over the summer, and the new development is already beginning to redefine its immediate urban context.
Perkins + Will Proposes All-timber Supertall for Downtown Chicago
Quote:
Carbon neutral, sustainable, and made entirely from all-timber frames, the supertalls of the future may be made almost completely out of wood and other natural materials. Or at least that could become the case if Perkins + Will have any say in the matter. Their River Beech Tower proposal for an 80-storey all-timber supertall for downtown Chicago could take timber construction to a whole new level.
Cladding Begins on 640 N Wells Apartment Tower in River North
Quote:
Eight months since our last update, and progress at the site of 640 N Wells, a 24-storey apartment tower by JDL Development currently on the rise in downtown Chicago's trendy River North district, has been swift. The structure now stands at just under 20 storeys, with the first glimpses of cladding having appeared over the last few weeks.
Niche 905 Nearly Complete in Chicago's River North District
Quote:
Since topping off back in the summer, progress has been moving along well at the site of Ascend Real Estate Group's Niche 905 in Chicago's rapidly rising River North district. Designed by FitzGerald Associates Architects, the 18-storey, 202-unit apartment tower has joined a corner of downtown Chicago that has witnessed an explosive amount of growth in the mid-rise condo and apartment market over the last few years.

Open House Draws Droves to Optima Chicago Center
Quote:
If you find yourself scoping out the inside of a newly built residential tower, it's probably because you're in the market for an apartment or condominium. But there was no expectation that guests pouring through the first building of the Optima Chicago Center complex in the Windy City this past weekend would leave as new homeowners. Rather, thanks to the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s popular Open House Chicago festival, the project by Optima DCH Development and DeBartolo Development swung open its doors to show off its swanky interiors and impressive views.

bKL sent out a tweet last night about 645 W. Madison's private and public terraces. Sounds like a good indication that this project still is a thing.

They're designing a 700m supertall in Shenzhen, China which means that'll be the 3rd tallest in the world after Jeddah Tower is finished.

I went to bKL's offices and they had a model of the entire West Loop with this built. Someone mentioned it was designed but was waiting on financing, making it seem like an imminent start (I'm guessing an anchor tenant? it's been in that stage for at least a couple years I think).

It also had the three-building development they're working on and something futuristic looking (albeit shorter) for this site: http://chicago.curbed.com/2016/6/30/...town-west-loop

I'm very curious about what's planned for the former Costa's site. Futuristic is good!
