The snippets view in Google Books shows some 1940 and 1941 listings with that address.

There's a good chance you got it, Noir_Noir. Compare a tiny feature of the adjoining building, the modern view from a gsv a little down the alley to the left between the buildings:

It looks as if the older building might be encased in the newer building.

Thanks Noir Noir and odinthor. As always, I appreciate the help.

NLA was quiet yesterday. I'm working on a few posts for this afternoon or tomorrow. (I've been distracted / my mother is in the hospital)

I happened upon this slide the other day on eBay.

Can someone remind where the Museum of Death was located? I remember talking about it a loooong time ago.

This next slide is much older.

Seller's description:..."1939 Color Slide: Sunset Blvd Hollywood Los Angeles Griffith Observatory in Back"

And this early sepia photograph was listed on eBay a couple of weeks ago.

There appears to be a decorative faux-oil well a bit farther down the block.

P.S. It's still listed. Go Here

We have mentioned the Museum of Death a couple of times on NLA, but that was the recent location at 6031 Hollywood Boulevard. That building was previously The Mastering Lab/West Beach Recorders, a studio where Pink Floyd once recorded (the sound deadening apparently gave the museum an eerie quality). You can still see the studio signage on the 2007 GSV images. The Museum of Death moved in around 2008. Wikipedia shows 6031 Hollywood Boulevard with the signage from e_r's picture. This had already been replaced when the Googlemobile drove past in 2009.

I read that the museum started in a former mortuary in San Diego, possibly on Fifth Avenue, but that didn't check out.

The cars in e_r's picture are from the '90s (VW Jetta/Toyota Celica), and I eventually found that the museum's original Los Angeles location (circa 2000) was at 6340 Hollywood Boulevard with an entrance on Ivar Avenue. I think that the Ivar side is the location shown in the photo above.

GSV

The Museum of Death is now at 6363 Selma Avenue.

This building is on Ivar, a few doors up from George Liberace's cafeteria, Sir George's.

e_r, here we have the east face (on the right)of S. Spring in the 100s block, looking north from the corner with 2nd.

A darker version of same, somewhat cropped:

The Bryson Block looms darkly on the left margin.

SW at Adams and Figueroa, May 3, 1933, 10:30 a.m.

The intersection of Adams and Figueroa is left of center, with the Auto Club HQ on the SWC and St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church
on the NWC. And that's one whopper of a greenhouse (I guess) near the right center edge!

National Archives (zoomable)

P.S. I'm thinking good thoughts for you and your mom, e_r.

Actually, it's YOUR Club E_R, I just noticed the front of the place says it's Club 49er!
Thanks for answering my question, MP. I sold my interest in the bar when my B-girls were arrested.

Here's a place we haven't seen before on NLA.

Vindicator Stock Farm, Corner of Vernon & Boyle, Los Angeles ca.1910.

eBay

Let's take a closer look.

eBay

Los Angeles Daily Times / November 22, 1910

Courtesy of the eBay seller.

I looked up the address and the stock farm bordered the west side of the Los Angeles River.

A fascinating picture. The oil well (?) says "Desmonds" and per Wikipedia that department store was located at 141 S Spring between 1890 and 1900 when it moved a couple of blocks south to the Ramona Block. From 1906 to 1915 it was at 301 S Spring. Can the car experts here narrow the date any? The photo says 1910.

Thanks for finding when Desmond's was at 141 S. Spring, Lorendoc! I found the La Fiesta celebration
began in 1894 and ran through 1897 before starting up again in 1901. With Desmond's where it was
when it was, I think the photo has to be 1894 to 1897 -- I'm leaning toward 1897 -- not 1910.

Here's a description of Desmond's store decoration for the 1897 La Fiesta parade. I don't know about
the horse, but at least "high-towered" and "lattice work" might apply to whatever that structure is:

April 22, 1897, Los Angeles Times @ Newspapers.com

Now let's take a closer look at the streetcar -- what does the banner on the front say?:

I think it says:

LA FIESTA / ATHLETIC (?)
CARNIVAL / PARK
SPORTS / THURSDAY (?)

So, if a sports carnival was going to be at Athletic Park on Thursday, maybe that was this:

Thursday, April 22, 1897, Los Angeles Times @ Newspapers.com

Another pointer to 1897 as the picture year perhaps.

Dr. Munk located in the Hammond Block on South Spring Street.

rescarta.lapl.org

By the next year he had moved to the Grant Block on South Broadway.

The nearby dentist sign likely for C. V. Baldwin or J. D. Van Vleck.

Though I don't know what the two have to do with each other, since contemporary directories don't have him in offices there.

________________

I believe the lower line reads "S.P. DEPOT". This car would've been operating on LARY's Westlake Line, which was converted to trolley operation by a predecessor in 1893. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a definitive date for eventual rerouting which would've given us an upper bound for the date of the photo. FWIW, I concur that the 1910 date is suspect and that 1897 seems like the better bet.
