Brandon Sun Blogger Making Plans for Co-op Brewpub in City’s Downtown


BRANDON, MB – Grant Hamilton, an editor and blogger at the Brandon Sun newspaper, is formulating a plan to open a co-op brewpub in a vacant historic firehall in downtown Brandon.
Hamilton first outlined the idea in a blog post on August 10th, where he described his vision of starting a co-op project to raise funds for Brewtinerie, a combination brewery and poutinerie (i.e. restaurant specializing in poutine and other pub grub). Follow up posts on August 17th and last Friday have gone into more detail, with descriptions of the strong support the idea has received from the community.

Sask. leads provinces in building permits

Saskatchewan led the provinces in the percentage increase in the value of building permits in August, on both a year-over-year and month-to-month basis, according to a report issued Friday by Statistics Canada.

Building permits in the province rose 48 per cent to $318.4 million (seasonally adjusted) in August over $215.3 million in August 2011, the highest percentage increase among the provinces and more than double the national average increase of 22 per cent.

Permits were up for both the residential and non-residential sectors on an annual basis. Residential permits rose by 49 per cent while non-resident permits were up by 46 per cent.

On a month-to-month basis, building permits in the province were also up, increasing 32 per cent between August and July. Again, Saskatchewan ranked first among the provinces, four times the eight-per-cent increase recorded nationally.

Sounds great till you see what the permits were for, they are not for large buildings but rather smaller ones. Thus the reason Saskatoon is losing two of its cranes right now that are coming to Winnipeg which we have a shortage of for all the towers going up.

I'll try to tackle this:

Under construction:

Centre Square Place - 10 story condo building on Broad and 15th. Crews are pouring the 7th floor this week.
Gardens on Rose - 1 floor retail, 4 floors parking, 8 floors condos. On Rose Street between Victoria and 13th. I think they have poured the retail and parking floors, and are starting on the first of the condo floors now.

Proposed:

Agriculture Place - this is the twinning of the FCC tower. ~ 10 stories, on the same block as the new Harvard tower, between the new Harvard Tower and FCC. This one is being built by the Hills so you can consider it as good as built. Construction to start mid-2013.

Announced:

16 story, 400,000 square foot office building on 1800 block of Rose Street. This was announced over a year ago and was originally proposed to bid on the new office space requirements of FCC. Since nothing has started, and FCC chose to go with a Hill proposal, there are some doubts as to whether this will be built.

12 story mixed use building (1 floor retail, 3 floors parking, 5 floors office, 3 floors condo) on the 1700 block of Hamilton. This was just announced recently, not sure about the likelihood of this tower going through.

Capital Pointe - 10 story hotel beside 26 story condo. See the thread on this, it is unlikely to be built.

Rumours:

Hill Tower IV, to the west of the existing 3 towers. Harvard has applied to demolish the existing buildings on the space (2 story, 100 year old vacant building that used to hold a restaurant and a lawyers office). This is purely speculation based on the Hills owning the land, their desire to to remove the existing buildings, and Regina's low office vacancy rate. This is several years in the future at the earliest, as Harvard will likely want to finish Tower 3 and Agriculture place before starting a new building.

There are a couple other 3-4 story office/condo buildings proposed/under construction in and around downtown, but the above are the only ones that would make a dent in the skyline.

Don't know if these were posted earlier but the facility is a year old. It seems that more and more regional communities are putting together these types of facilities.

Saskatchewan's newest town built by BHP for workers for construction of the Jansen mine. This camp holds 2500 people and has been constructed near Punnichy.

Not when you listen to Ralph Goodale and the Federal NDP. They make it sound that BHP has put a hex on Saskatchewan due to the handling of the Potash Corp Take-over bid.

Interesting article from the CBC on a company called Brightenview Development International Inc. that wants to build the Dundurn International Exhibition Centre. with 350 companies selling products from China.

Quite the development proposal. Hopefully, has substance (money) behind it. Good for the little town of Dundurn. Alterntively, given their business plan, it would have been a great fit for the GTH.

Interesting article there^^^. I for one do not think this will happen. I have no idea where they expect to get private funding for this, its over 200km away from regina, half between the two to cities....not really?? Let saskatoon publicly fund this, i for one would not want too.

Also exciting to note the interview with paul hill on CTV. He hopes to see harvard 4 ,5 and 6 get built and he would like to see them built b4 the next 20years goes by. It will be exciting times in regina as long we have the hills!!!

SOrry but I don't get it. Who would build something like this in the middle of nowhere (no offense Dundurn!). Seriously though, I can't imagine too many people from Regina driving two hours to go shop ultra low quality products from China. I mean I can go to one of the many dollar stores in the city. I guess Saskatonians are a bit closer, but this just steals development away from Saskatoon. And the render is a bit ridiculous, I mean seriously, they're going to build two skyscrapers in Dundurn, haha, too funny! Seems a bit sketchy and I can't see this happenning or being good for either Saskatoon or Regina..

Included is a brief mention of the conference centre, fitness centre, state-of-the-art elevators, roof top patio, a time-lapse video of the tower's construction (taken from the webcam images) and today's media release.

Is this a joke? A shopping center in Dundurn? That's like building the new Riders football stadium in Davidson, makes no sense.

I believe this "shopping centre" is primarily for retailers not for retail - ie HD and Lowes buyers would come here and pick the stuff that appears in their stores from an array of chinese companies. They already have something like this in Chicago called merchandise mart - one of the largest buildings in the US. Who the hell is going to fly to saskawhat vs. fly to chicago to buy stuff? this makes no sense - Saskatoon and Regina have crappy air service never mind dundurn. I would think the most important factor for a facility like this would be the ability of buyers to get in and out quick and back to where ever in NA they came from.....a difficult flight to Saskatoon followed by a one hour......taxi? to dundurn is not going to cut it.

I'm all for development; however, if the Chinese were to develop Dundurn, why not Davidson instead???!!!!! (In order to take advantage of the Regina-area market.) Bizarre!!!

It is a weird proposal.

I don't know. Google Map estimates the travel time from the Saskatoon airport to Dundurn at 37 min. That is not bad. No one is going to be bothered by a half hour drive along a divided highway with light traffic when you compare it what is needed to get across Toronto, Chicago or Vancouver. I suspect if they are doing retail in addition to wholesale being outside of a major city helps keep the wholesale customers on board as they are not really a direct competitor.

I would expect the the selling feature of Dundurn is cheap land prices. Maybe having a large hotel/casino nearby helps, who knows. What I don't understand is if this is for real why not a community north of Saskatoon that would be closer to the airport.
