Smile NEW YORK | 600 West 125th Street | 403 FT | 34 FLOORS

Here are details on Columbia’s 34-story university housing tower

Quote:
Columbia University plans to bring a 34-story residential tower to West Harlem amid its massive campus expansion.

The project at 600 West 125th Street will span just over 175,000 square feet and have 142 units for students and faculty, according to an application with the city Department of Buildings. It will replace a decades-old McDonald’s that closed a few months ago.

The university acquired the deed from the fast-food giant in 2004 for about $2.7 million, property records show.

Construction on the tower is expected to start in early 2020 and wrap up by Summer 2022, a university spokesperson said. The project should reduce demand on the local housing market, the spokesperson added. Columbia said it will steer 35 percent of contracting to local-, women- and minority-owned firms.

Though it will stand across from several of the university’s recent construction projects, the new tower is not part of Columbia’s massive Manhattanville campus expansion, the spokesperson said. That 6.8 million-square-foot construction project is spread across 17 acres.

Permits Filed For 600 West 125th Street In Manhattanville

Quote:
Permits have been filed for a 34-story building at 600 West 125th Street in Manhattanville. Located on the corner of Broadway and West 125th Street, the lot is steps away from the 125th Street subway station, serviced by the 1 train. The Trustees of Columbia University is listed as the owner behind the applications.

The proposed 391-foot-tall development will yield 175,044 square feet, with 141,565 square feet designated for community facility space and 5,000 square feet for commercial space. The building will have 142 residences for graduate students and faculty with an average unit scope of 996 square feet. The concrete-based structure will also have a cellar and a McDonald’s currently on the site will return in the ground-floor commercial space.

CetraRuddy Architecture is listed as the architect of record.

Demolition permits were filed last month. An estimated completion date has not been announced.

Another McD's giving birth to a skyscraper.

See plans for new NoMad Hotel, 40-story Manhattanville Tower and DDG's Williamsburg development

Quote:
In December 2019, Columbia University filed permits for a new 34-story, 142-unit tower that would provide housing for graduate students and faculty at its new Manhattanville campus. ZD1 application has been approved, giving us our first look at the building has emerged. An axonometric diagram shows several setbacks in a tower measuring over 400 feet tall. It will rise on the site of a decades-old McDonald's, and the fast-food chain will be the building's ground-floor tenant. Completion was estimated for 2022, but it remains to be seen how the COVID-19 pandemic will affect that timeline. Despite the promise of McNuggets, the project has not been deemed essential construction.

It’s a travesty that the utter garbage to the south of this site is not part of this plan.

So now there will be at least three vaguely art-decoish 400 ft. towers at the northern end of Morningside Heights. Sounds good to me.

We'll have the Columbia tower, the UTS condo tower and the JTS condo tower.

Good to see the uptick in noticeable towers for the area. Even the Bronx is seeing some sizable additions. Ones that overtime may create mini-skylines.

So I just realized that the building shown in the zoning diagram is only using half of the L-shaped McDonalds lot and it only appears to be using 1/2 of the available FAR. Anyone have an idea on what is being planned for the other half of the lot?

I think its just the dimensions of it, not merged into the remaining portion of the parcel (the portion not associated with this project).

Columbia has a number of major residential projects planned around its new campus.

I suspect this will be the first of many new Columbia-sponsored towers.

I think I like the axo diagram more than the rendering. Does that make sense to anyone else?

There was a rendering on the Columbia U website that showed this tower and then a placeholder tower directly behind. Columbia owns the whole block.

So this will probably be a two-phase, two-tower development.

Foundation Work Underway For Columbia University Tower At 600 West 125th Street In Manhattanville, Manhattan

Quote:
Excavation and foundation work are underway at 600 West 125th Street, the site of a 34-story tower on Columbia University‘s Manhattanville campus. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with CetraRuddy Architecture as the executive architect and developed by the Trustees of Columbia University, the 391-foot-tall building will yield 175,000 square feet with 141,565 square feet of community facility space, 5,000 square feet of commercial space, and 142 residences for graduate students and faculty members. The property was once home to a McDonald’s and is located at West 125th Street and Broadway, directly across from The Forum and Wallach Art Gallery, also designed by Renzo Piano.

Photographs taken from the adjacent 125th Street subway station, serviced by the 1 train, and from street level show the scope of excavation and foundation progress. Machinery and crews were seen putting together the numerous pilings across the plot.
