funny thing about that building is that the third floor had to be pushed back because of height restrictions on corydon….seems a bit strict.

I guess we can't allow unrestricted development of three storey buildings and have Corydon turned into a Wall St. style urban canyon...

And there is a street lighting study!! A chance for everyone to complain about the haphazard style of lighting.

The first few minutes of the video below, show that street lighting doesn't have to mean "street lamp". Even tiny little Winnipeg had lighting placed on the trees on Broadway (can't remember if its still there).

Scaffolding is down at Newport. They didn’t touch the lower three floors, so I’m gonna guess they’re waiting til next year when BMO moves out to finish the podium upgrades. There’s still a ton of work ongoing on the Carlton sidewalk area.

Speaking of banks, it looks like the RBC sign at 201 Portage is coming down... presumably to be replaced with a TD sign...

So I guess us older folks can go back to calling it the TD Tower again?

I believe RBC is staying in their existing building at Portage and Fort... They and CIBC have kept the same main branch locations since the 60s.

I wonder if there has been any movement on the main BMO branch? I was thinking it could be quite a coup for one of the credit unions like SCU to land a banking hall like that!

Unfortunately very expensive to heat ...

I hope it becomes the home of City of Winnipeg Archives.

We have banked there since 1927. I remember going into the vaults with my dad as a child. The offices on the mezzanine are wood panelled with fireplaces. Just beautiful..

I so hope it finds a respectful use similar to the historic BNS on Portage Avenue.

If the barriers at P&M come down, I reckon there would be more interest garnered for the former BMO branch.

Thanks. Is this something that could be changed like it was on Provencher?

That's a fantastic idea. I honestly haven't been able to think of anything other than some sort of venue/restaurant that would be a good fit for the space, and keep it fairly active.

Considering most of our archives are in a warehouse right now – that would be an awesome use. City of Winnipeg Archives & Museum. Love it. Great location for it not only being right at P&M – but close to The Forks and in a prominent central space for tourists and locals.

Not sure if it's been fully implemented yet, but the Corydon-Osborne masterplan that was created a few years ago calls for mid-rise mixed use (up to 5 storeys/60 ft) on the blocks close to Stafford and Pembina, and low rise mixed use (max 45 feet) between Wentworth and Daly.

It's a little ridiculous considering how much the city loves to talk about "precedent" when within this "low density" zone there's already a 10 storey apartment at Arbuthnot, and a 7 storey quasi-industrial building at Daly. That should be the standard/precedent. If we need to enact setbacks and height stepbacks, fine, but there's already mid-rise buildings in that area, so why not let there be more if developers are willing to build that density.
