Smile NEW YORK | Five Franklin Place | HEIGHT?? | 20 FLOORS

http://www.fivefranklinplace.com/

The Architecture

Five Franklin Place, the first major American building by acclaimed Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, is a celebration of the art of building, the translation of a daring international vision into a perfect local expression, and proof that the practical and the sublime, the historic and the new, can exist in ideal balance — all in a simply extraordinary place to live.

The Address

One of the greatest pleasures of living at Five Franklin Place is arriving at its front door on one of New York City’s most historic and picturesque cobbled alleys, newly restored and planted with vertical facade gardens. Once known as Sugar Loaf Alley, this intimate, lovely passage is among the few remaining such private streets in Manhattan — a coveted residential address reminiscent of the city’s poetic past.

The amenities of Five Franklin Place have been carefully conceived and designed with an unusual attention to detail. Services include a full-time doorman, on-premises concierge offering a host of hotel-style services, and resident manager to tend to everyday needs. Valet parking, individual storage units, and bicycle storage areas are also available, at an additional cost.

Lobby

The lobby of Five Franklin Place provides a perfect transition from street to home, beautifully crafted with curving geometries and sensual materials, every detail carefully considered by UNStudio.

This building is so amazing. I though this one is under construction already.

I love the subtle "Aqua-ness" to it.

Very modern and stylish, I hope this gets built!

Craziest Rendering of 2008 Becomes Least Crazy of 2011

Monday, October 17, 2011
by Sara Polsky

Quote:
Paging 2008. 2008, do you copy? We'd like 5 Franklin Place back, please. Dutch architect Ben van Berkel's black and bendy vision was our favorite crazy rendering of 2008, and with good reason. But the building never rose above two stories thanks to mortgage issues, and after several twists and turns, Israeli firm Fishman Holdings picked up the property in September. They planned for luxury condos, and The Real Deal gets the first peek at the new design. Details: there will be 19 stories and 58 units—no word on pricing yet—with construction to start in the first quarter of 2012. It appears the new Richard DeMarco design forgot the fun. Sadface.

19-story condo planned for 5 Franklin Place

October 17, 2011
By Katherine Clarke

Quote:
Israeli-based property investment firm Fishman Holdings closed on a development site at 5 Franklin Place in Tribeca last week, after successfully bidding for the property at a foreclosure auction in September, and has released some details, including a rendering, of its plans for the site exclusively to The Real Deal.

The firm is planning a 19-story, 58-unit condominium, Yehuda Mor, executive vice president of Fishman, told The Real Deal. Construction on the new development will begin in the first quarter of 2012. Mor declined to comment on the size or price of the units or on who would be marketing the building, saying it was premature.

"We think the time is right to enter the Tribeca housing market," he said.

Where's the guy who made that decision to redesign the tower so I could slap some sense into him. That original design was incredible and the new one looks like they stole the design from the 90's.

Just awful. All the more painful because of the prior proposal.

The original design is one of the worst casualties of the recession. Really unfortunate that the developer had an amazing design, but then decided to redesign to a completely bland and generic box.

What a catastrophe. Just awful!

If I ran New York, I would so implement a design czar. Crap like this has no business being built in prime Manhattan.

Another beautiful building destroyed not even by VEing but simply lack of vision. The original design was badass.

One of the worst architectural revisions ever, simply terrible. I hope and pray that new design isn't final.

Seriously? It amazes me how someone could have asked for a revision, when they had such a jaw dropping design. Mind boggles me to no end.

^ I'm certain it was purely a cost issue, but it doesn't make it any less painful to the aesthetically in-tune.
