Aon's pure monolithic form is the design's lone redeeming quality.

interrupting those verticals at the very top just looks terrible to me.

i don't care how good the views are from up there. it's not worth it to me to ruin how this tower looks from the ground just to enhance the views from the top.

Finally, what my tacky comment was for the stupid little amusement park ride on top, which is objectively tacky
I won't argue the amusement park ride on the top, though I would probably actually ride it once just for the experience.

Not exactly sure how in the world you actually COULD make an attempt at blending in an exterior glass elevator in with a building like Aon. Honestly, the monolithic appearance of it kind of makes it impossible to make anything blend in, so the best you can really do is make it relatively unobtrusive overall.

As for the top couple of floors of stone removal, well, that's entirely a personal aesthetics thing. I understand that it causes the pure monolithic form to be altered, no doubt about it. I personally think that is actually a benefit rather than a harm in this particular situation, but that's just me. At least being the top few floors it's only a small section being altered, so to me it's less of an overall issue. Again though, I understand why people disagree with me on that one, of course.

I wouldn't mind the elevator if they were just adding a pentouse level made of glass or something like that. They could have a setback all the way around with and outdoor observation deck like top of the rock.

Eventually someone is going to propose a roller coaster that snakes around the building exterior in one long looping descent.

I'm debating to myself which is worse; the exterior elevator or the granite removal at the top floors. Initially my disdain fell mostly on the exterior elevator. Now I'm starting to see how the tower's design goes to sh*t with the removal of the top of the vertical granite columns.

Ugh, I hope they don't find funding and the project is quietly shelved. A well timed recession might also make quick work of this proposal as well.

Ugh..Just ugh. Poor Aon! The elevator would be one thing, but messing with her crown is just way the hell and gone over the line, it's not a good look for her!

This will be an absolute abomination! Why? Just why? I love the look of this building. I also like the one in LA. Why mess with it for Christ's sake?

If they are intent on doing this, I’d much rather see all of the verticals cut short and the observation section stepped back just a hair. Maintain the purity. No clue on the corner elevator, I almost want 2 of them on diagonal corners that then break the roof plane and are joined in a plane at the roof.

This type of facade doesn’t really lend itself to such a violation. See the Paul Hastings Tower in LA for a perfect example of what not to do.

I’m not the biggest ED Stone fan, but this was his seminal work.

Yes, what they did to Paul Hastings Tower was a disgrace! They didn't even try to match the glass to the building's facade, it looks like a poorly planned add-on. Too bad Aon's penthouse is so full of mechanical stuff, they could do something similar to Top of the Rock- turn the penthouse into an indoor deck, with the roof serving as its outdoor space, with glass panels keeping people from falling or climbing over. This would do a lot less to deface the looks of the building.

Not fan of this. I also don't really see AON's location as a great spot for an observatory. At the edge of the skyline, half the view is just water. Grant Park can be seen just as well from Sears. So what's the business case? That Millennium Park is pulling in so many tourists that want an observation deck right across the street?

Actually, the views are amazing. The first time I walked into the Mid America Club, my jaw dropped. Great views all around. Of course, you must go right up to the 5 foot wide window see it.

^They could leave the interior part of the deck alone and do something similar to Top of the Rock's outdoor platform on the roof. At least that wouldn't mess with the building's looks.

Wow....that thing earns the "Get that off your screen before someone sees it" award...Good Lord I hope this doesn't go through. I will be starting a strict landmark petion for Aon now.

You are so wrong it's absolutely laughable, aaron38. Until you've been up at or near the top of Aon, you have no clue how incredible the views really are. They, quite frankly, blow even Hancock out of the water, and make Sears' views look downright pedestrian!

IMO, of course.
