Jesus...the whole 'lead paint caused the crime in the 70s/80s/90s yet caused no uptick in crime prior to this time for some strange reason' theory?

I think the correlation is more with lead in fuel, the 1950s and 60s saw a big increase in car use so people growing up in that era could have childhood brain development affected, then from the 80s onwards lead was replaced in fuels

A lot of cars back then didn't have air conditioning either, which meant that people pretty much always had their windows down. More people smoked cigarettes then, too, which also likely would have meant they'd have their windows down inhaling car exhaust while smoking.

St Paul is at 30 now after a man was shot on the North Side of the city. It's been a particularly bad year. The average for the 10 years prior was 15.2/yr (a low of 8 and a high of 22). The year isn't even over :\

There have been 21 murders in Amsterdam so far this year, six up on the 2018 total, according to the capital’s Parool newspaper. The number of murders in the city has varied between 15 and 30 per year for more than 10 years but one trend is clear – the victims and killers are increasingly likely to be young men, the paper said. Nine of this year’s victims were under the age of 30 and disputes between rival gangs were responsible for the bulk of the deaths, the Parool said.

Not sure if these are numbers for the city (pop 866.000) or metro area. I think its referring to the city area as the numbers last year were quiet low. If the numbers are for the City - it would make Amsterdam one of the highest on the list in Europe of 2019.

------

Stockholm Metro (pop 2.3 mil) 38 confirmed (could be 45).
Stockholm Municipality (pop 972.000): 16
Gothenburg Municipality (pop 575.000) 6
Malmö Municipality (pop 330.000): 9

Total Sweden so far (pop 10 mil): 108 confirmed.
Number of killings with firearms: 41

Total murders in Sweden may be up from last year by a little bit, but the 3 big cities are down.

------

London City (pop 8,9 mil) had a total of 137 killings on the 11th of December. Highest number since 2008.

Thanks for your posts.

Those rates are all quite low by U.S. standards but still quite a bit higher than most people would expect to see in genteel "bicycle monarchies" of northern Europe.

The Madrid region finished 2019 with 33 murders for 6,662,000 people, or a rate of 0.5, among the lowest for major European cities:

Madrid records 33 murders en 2019, among them 7 domestic violence cases, 7 robberies y 2 dismemberments

That compares to 36 cases in 2018, and is close to the modern low of 30 cases from 2015.

By methodology, 18 of the cases were stabbings, 5 were shootings, 5 were assaults, 3 were strangulations, 1 was a vehicular assault, and 1 was a poisoning.

Toronto ended 2019 with 75 murders, which is higher than average, but 22% lower than last year's all-time record of 96. Nevertheless, shootings were up even from last year.

Austin finished 2019 with 35 murders in the city, the same as 2018, which were both the highest number since 2016 when we had 39. That was a decade high as well that rivaled the highs of the early 90s.

2019 was also the first year that the suburban county murder totals exceeded 50% of Austin's total and was equal to 50% of the Travis County number of 38 where Austin is located.

New Orleans finished 2019 with the lowest murder count since 1971. There were 119 murders in the city last year. Per capita rate of 30/100,000.

I don't think Spain releases official statistics until later in the year. Until then, you'd probably need to run a news search for City name (in Spanish) + 'homicidios' or 'asesinados.' So for instance, this story:

Seville's 10 biggest events of 2019

Says that the city of Seville only had one murder. But it also refers to more murders within the PROVINCE of Seville, including 3 related to marijuana trafficking. The Madrid numbers are for something called the "Comunidad de Madrid," as opposed to just the city of Madrid. So it can be a bit tricky with the exact definitions for where things are happening, much like in the US with city vs. county distinctions.

Chicago ended the year at 514 which is a decrease of 77 compared to the prior year. That puts the murder rate at 19 per 100,000.

This is nothing compared to late 19th -early 20th century, when people used to ingest or shove lead/mercury/meth suppositories up their rectum as part of their medicine, Coca-Cola had actual cocaine in it, and heroin was used routinely to cure coughs in children.
