The city is against canyons to prevent areas from being in perpetual shadow..
Well.. at least.. NOW they are against it hehe.. as we all know there are areas in the west end that are already like that, like the apartment areas around hess area.
It's why you will be hard pressed to find any new developments where there is a huge new building on one side AND on the other side. diagonally sure, but not right across from each other.
They want more designs like the william thomas building - where you got a 3-6 story storefront type area/parking garage/podium/commercial area and then a condo set back that towers up - like the new development going up on king and hughson st where the old bingo hall was.
The only new canyon area I can think is that george st development but that one road set in perpetual shadow is barely used by anyone so I don't think they particularly cared.
Perhaps they learned from the oppressive stalinistic botch job of the jackson square monoliths and AGH area where you just feel closed in and both sides feel unwelcoming and unfriendly.
..but I digress. I think it would have been cool if the above designs had been staggered at different heights to give it a bit of a diversity - it is true what a lot of people say - it feels like a giant building design that has sunk 2/3s into the ground - the design feels too stunted - still it's a nice look regardless, and kudos on the peaked style roofs and not just another flat roof design.
