We get it already.

Alberta and Saskatchewan suck, and Manitoba is fantastic.

You words not mine... I all I said having a pro-business government would help the economy. The same holds for Manitoba.

Seems if you aren't wearing rose coloured glasses you think somewhere sucks. Every province has to pros and cons... and no province is perfect.

Every province can improve .... making a suggestion towards Saskatchewan isn't out of dislike or disrespect.

What will the Sask Party do? Sell SaskTel to Shaw? That would be a great idea...cut hundreds of jobs.

Who says they have to sell it to Shaw??

Look at MTS/Allstream .. third largest telecom in Canada. The workforce has doubled since privatizing. MTS has continues to fill in more and more office space in Winnipeg.

And SaskTel is considered to be one of the leading telecommunications company in the industry. Why mess with a good thing?

Newflyer- Let's just say, " Don't believe the hype. " Sask is not the socialist province that everyone talks about. The crown corps run like any large business. In fact, if they didn't exist, all the money paid in bills would go to another province or country. Secondly, they pay more in dividends then any corporation does in taxes and keep taxes and utility rates far below anywhere else, especially Calgary.

Lastly, you contradict yourself by stating that Calgarians don't work as hard but then later state that Saskatchewan is afraid of hard work, which is it ?

The free market has many positives but it is not the end all and be all of economics, the most successful economies are mixed economies. A too open market leads to booms and busts, which Calgary should know all to well about them.

Funny how every company says they are leading the industry.. I guess it looks better on the ads than saying otherwise.

The hard work comment was a reference to a comment made by Delreg. I said many workers in Calgary have it pretty damn easy.

The boom and bust economy you speak of is really due to the commodity Calgary is based on. Industries like telecom are not cyclical.

Crown Corps are not even moderately as efficient as successful private business. Government run businesses are full of inefficiences from top to bottom. It really is based on many economic reasons, but the most simplistic answer is government business is not forced to compete for profit. It is also a product of politics and political staging.

This will be my last post on this issue. I am not going to attempt to further convince you of proven economic fact that private enterprise is many times more efficient than government. Or bring up how significant economies like China and other leftist governments has grown with a growth of private investment. All I'll say is Saskatchewan could be much more.

Saskatchewan has more government than any other province. Sasktel is even still government corp .. come on guys the 80's are over.

Sask needs a good pro-business govenment. That would really help the local business community to develop and expand.
.
Not necessarily those farmers being small companies, I'm talking about all the service stations in each town being their own company since the big companies don't see it profitable enough to put in franchises.

Yes you are right... I love driving through small farm towns and seeing the amount of local business. It makes almost every town a nice place to stop, because the locally owned shops show some pride.

Yes, they mixed their economies up and it worked, mixed being the key word. SaskTel, since you used telcoms as an example, is operating in a fully competitive market, no monopoly. As for inefficiencies , I have worked for private corporations with more inefficient behaviour and structures then any government, I have worked at or with.

Its purely the free market which makes them grow. The mixed economy may have some benefits on a very limited basis, but it is the free market economy which is making the world economy grow.

Not all private corps are efficient, but the free market takes care of that.

See: Air Canada, GM, Ford, Eatons... you suck you die.

Government corp ... you suck .. you keep sucking forever because nothing changes. (no incentive to be efficient)

newflier I thought you were giving up? Oh well us dumb hicks from Saskatchewan can't understand the good life in Alberta or is it Manitoba? I guess anywhere but Saskatchewan eh?

Maybe we should just give up and turn off the lights here. Maybe we can all move to Alberta and live off of welfare?

Better yet I can work LONG hours to pay for my housing and utilities in the free markets of Alberta.

Its funny how newflyer thinks that Alberta's booming economy is a result of Albertans having an inherently superior capitalist attitude.

Alberta got lucky and gone-done struck oil. Simple as that.

Now its becoming clear that Saskatchewan has huge amounts of oil, maybe even as much as Alberta, if you don't count the high-cost oil sands. And there is now more and more investment in Sask. Sask is starting to boom, there's no question

just this week, I sent out at least 10-20 permits for seismic testing in south-east Saskatchewan, because they're discovering more oil there every day

Saskatchewan didn't keep the NDP in power for so long because we have some "anti-business" socialist attitude, its because the Devine conservatives did such an efficient job of fucking this province up. Only now are we finally climbing out of the debt they put us in. So quit your bantering, Newflyer

and besides, according to recent polls, the NDP don't stand a chance in the next election anyways. The Sask party has a huge lead right now, hopefully they do a better job than the last conservative party

And newflyer: as for thinking that crown corps are not as friendly as private companies.. Last year SGI sent every driver in the province a cheque for about $100 (in most cases, more than $100) because they made too much money, and wanted to reward the citizens for being safe drivers. They did the same thing this year as well, and they are now planning on lowering rates across the board

How many private insurance companies would do that? My guess is none. They'd simply pocket the excess money, unless they were forced to by competition

Amongst many firsts, here are some crucial ones from SaskTel:

-In 1991, SaskTel customers were offered a first for Canada in custom calling services - Call Display, Call Trace and Call Return
-In 1994, SaskTel was the first in Canada to offer a long distance savings plan
-In 1995, SaskTel was at the forefront in Canada to offer universal Internet access to both urban and rural residents, and was the first in Canada to offer it with no long distance charges
-In 1996, SaskTel was the first in North America to offer high speed Internet service using digital subscriber line (DSL) technology
-In 2006, SaskTel became the first IPTV provider in North America to offer HDTV channels
