kengo kuma: teikyo university elementary school, tokyo

the teikyo university elementary school in tokyo, japan, offers the appearance of a wooden school house in the bustling city. the 7,781.52 m2 learning space designed by kengo kuma and associates is a three-storey structure which features a large roof which spans the length of the building - its sloping nature changes the length and height of the eaves, responding to the establishment's different programs and surrounding environment. the environmentally-friend plan, employs a device used to gather heat which faces to the south. this solar system warms air to circulate below it, venting through the floor during winter.

Azerbaijan Tower Proposal / Avesta Group

With plans to become the world’s tallest building at about 3645 feet, the Azerbaijan Tower is being built on a series of artificial islands, the Khazar Islands, in the Caspian Sea 16 miles south of Baku, Azerbaijan. Avesta Group, the company behind the project, is expecting to have the skyscraper completed by 2019 at an estimated cost of $2 billion. With 189 floors, it is expected to surpass the the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai and Saudi Arabia’s proposed 3280 foot Kingdom Tower. More images can be viewed after the break.

american firm richard meier architects has jsut won the competition to design the new 'engel & völkers headquarters,' a mixed-use complex in the hafencity district of hamburg expected to open in 2015. re-designing the courtyard typology while improving its function and efficiency, the design expresses varying levels of transparency, with an exterior shell marked by translucent panels - simple and elegant - and a more expressive interior where the residents and visitors will actually spend their time.

The Aviation Display Hall is a major new museum facility for the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT)’s collection of historic aircraft. It was designed to extend the existing aviation building on the museum’s Meola Road site in Auckland. At 3300m2, the extension will enable MOTAT to house all of their aviation exhibits, some of which are the only remaining examples in the world, in a protected environment for the first time.

renowned american architect rick joy has designed the 'amangiri resort' in canyon point, utah, near the border of arizona. in par with the architect's
oeuvre, the complex bears an intrinsic position in the desert site spotted with flat mesas and water-carved plateaus. the resort features an impressive
program covering 243 hectares of land: 34 suites with various views and characteristics, a lounge, several swimming pools, spa, fitness center, and a
central pavilion that contains a library, art gallery, and private/public dining areas, amongst other functions. to capture the desert landscape, strong
simple geometries backdrop the rough textured rock, at times taking on the role of spectator while at others integrating seamlessly into it, allowing the
natural contours to inform the nature of the man-made construct.

Following a competition organised by the Paris Chamber of Commerce, the restructuring and extension of Advancia business school, located on Armand Moisant street in Paris, was entrusted to AS.Architecture-Studio. This higher education institution, specialising in entrepreneurship, should accommodate 1500 students in 2011. The building features a proper ty complex including classrooms, offices, 3 amphitheatres, a 260-seat auditorium, a resource centre, a recording studio and food and beverage areas.

The site is located in a strategic position within the residential area of Singapore, close to the amenities of Holland Road and the future MRT station. The absence of high rise buildings in the near surroundings and direct connection to the main traffic route of Farrer Road makes this a prestigious and highly visible site across the whole city. The design is generated by the study of the existing alignments of roads, buildings and topography surrounding the site, with the primary axis lines brought into the site and linked together to ensure the greatest degree of connectivity to the neighbourhood.

HWCD: bamboo courtyard teahouse

floating in a peaceful lake in the shiqiao garden just northwest of shanghai, the 'bamboo courtyard teahouse' design be architect sun wei of HWCD exemplifies ancient chinese cultural and architectural traditions interpreted tastefully in contemporary times. as the vernacular includes inward facing pavilions to create a more internal landscape, the floating teahouse is conceived on the overlaying of two regular square grids with individual structures that play on the solid-void characteristic to create a protected inner environment.

Mad Proposal Would Triple Height Of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum

But don’t freak out when you see that lead image. As you might glean from the title, the Guggenheim Extension Story is not, in fact, a real project. Oiio Architecture Office, the architects behind the tall tale, have no actual plans or ambitions to add thirteen floors to FLW’s Guggenheim Museum. Instead, they conceived of the cheeky scheme as a kind of critique on the preciousness of listed and iconic architectures. “[The] Guggenheim Museum,” they write, “has become so iconic, so emblematic and hermetic in our minds that it can no longer be touched by architects!” Continue.

The ironclad laws of heritage and preservation would even have prevented Wright himself—resurrected from grave—to make any modifications to his own building, the designers claim. “Even if its own creator were to propose an alternation of its form, New Yorkers would suddenly feel as if they have lost a dear old friend.” While the design merits of the “proposal” are interesting enough, it’s the project’s snark that proves the more appealing and effective. SOM Chicago wins Wujiang Greenland Tower competition

The Chicago office of SOM | Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP won an international competition for the Greenland Group Suzhou Center in Wujiang, China. This 358 meters high split-core tower is their sixth project with the Greenland Group. Key design feature for this high-rise is semi-controlled atrium acting as the “lung” of the building, maximizing daylight penetration and natural ventilation in the public spaces and the lobbies. Series of high efficiency measures were taken along the design process, with the objective to achieve a 60% savings in energy consumption and a 60% reduction in potable water use. This highly efficient landmark is a result of interdisciplinary collaboration and the serious commitment to elegant high performance design.

schoolhouse in grono by raphael zuber

using the geometry of a square inscribed in a circle, raphael zuber's first built work is an elegant assertion of architectural wonder on the quiet swiss landscape. in his winning competition entry for a school and kindergarten, zuber envisioned a building of quadrate proportions that interacted with the sloping green landscape of a public square in the bucolic town of grono. the realized building makes manifest a garden as a circular crater, overgrown with flowers and walnut trees that doubles as a play area for kindergarteners. the building stands in the middle of the garden with a rising bridge that quietly curves into the first floor. the concrete slabs that make up the structure are brown pigmented in situ to match the local soil and are further subdivided with non-load bearing elements. the physical presence of the concrete borders on delicate given the euclidean cutouts that further multiply the layers of geometric inscriptions.

MAD architects: sheraton huzhou hot spring resort

the chinese-based sheraton hotel chain is planning an aggressive expansion in 2013, opening 30 new branches in the asia-pacific area and four in africa and the middle east; 15 alone will open in china within the year. the sheraton huzhou hot spring resort' is perhaps the most striking of this endeavor, designed by beijing-based architect ma yansong of MAD architects. it features an unforgettable form of layered floors creating a ring emerging from the south bank of taihu lake. standing at just over 100 meters high and 116 meters wide, the hotel covers an area of 75 acres and provides 321 rooms and villas, including 40 suites, 37 villas, presidential suites, and a total floor area of 95,000 square meters, coming to an investment of about 1.5 billion dollars. the design is the perfect embodiment of water, giving every room a view of the lake, natural light, and ventilation no matter where it is located. an LED light system on the exterior skin of the construct brings the metal structure to life at night, displaying colorfully animated textures and patterns, reflected on the water's surface.
