Eleven U.S. markets contain more than 100,000 small businesses each -- and an additional 14 metropolitan areas have between 50,000 and 100,000 apiece.
The total for these 25 markets, according to a new study by On Numbers, is 3.13 million small businesses.

The New York City area leads the way with 522,789 small businesses as of 2010, followed by Los Angeles with 323,859 and Chicago with 230,624. Also above 100,000 are Miami, Philadelphia, Washington, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Boston and San Francisco-Oakland.
