101 Polk Street at Hayes

Now that the foundation has been poured the building is now above the ground. The beautiful mural on the Academy of Art building will mostly disappear from sight in a few weeks. Why the school painted it when it was known that a building would block it within a couple of years is a puzzle.

The painting isn't going to be blocked, its just becoming slightly more private. 101 Polk will have outdoor space on the second floor next to the painting that uses the mural as a backdrop. From certain angles on the street the painting will still be visible (at an extreme angle). Still better than this being another parking lot. You can see what I am talking about here.

101 Polk Street at Hayes - Update 09/04/2014

Fimiak - you are correct, part of the mural will be viewable. Looking at the construction site picture today and the plan presented to the San Francisco Department of Planning (case 2011.0702EXC 05/02/13) half of the mural will be completely obstructed by 101 Polk Street. It appears that the property of 101 Polk Street will abut the Academy of Art building for half of the block.

Great updates, Jerry, thanks!

I keep forgetting about 350 Bush. Can't believe it might actually start this month. I need something to draw me north on my construction walkabouts.

Here are a few notes on another future project:

Quote:
Related's other S.F. biggie is the Goodwill site in Midmarket, which we were the first to report on in May. The prime site at South Van Ness and Mission, which sits in a growing residential and tech office hub, is an interesting deal, he says, because Related is fee developing it on behalf of the city. The site will include a 460k SF office building to house several city departments, 550 or so multifamily residential units, and 20k to 30k SF of retail. Because of city involvement, there's a head start on the entitlement process with the planning department, he adds, and construction will kick off in a couple years. He also hopes to get a good-sized site in Potrero Hill entitled in the next few years.
Wish we had something more specific than "in a couple years" but it's something. And the Potrero mention is interesting.

1400 Mission Street - Facing is now going onto it

I noticed today that the skin is being applied to 1400 Mission St. It looks like it will be a very light color. I think it will be a winner for me.

I noticed the tiny windows that open out on the bottom. I doubt these apartments will be air conditioned so I wonder what these people will do on a hot day. I don't understand this trend to put in small windows that open out. Anyone have an answer?

^You don't think those new units will be air conditioned?

I doubt it, especially for an all BMR building.

Thumbs up 1400 Mission Street

I did a street view of 1400 Mission today and I am very pleased with it. This is the view of the Mission Street side.

Jerry, ^ is like an arrow that indicates a post is at least partially in response to the immediately preceding post.

I was thinking 30 Van Ness, down the block. An architectural student once told me 30 Van Ness was the most beautiful building in the city.

^ Did that student ever work as an architectural intern at 30 Van Ness?

I worked there for a year. The view over Fell Street was of a decrepit animal hospital. Most of the letters on the neon sign were broken, so it just flashed "SPIT".

I suppose he admired the plainn...er simplicity of it. He also said he was "fascinated by the ideology of the sandwich". My thought was, "That word doesn't mean what you think it does."

SFMTA has a few historical pics of 30 Van Ness. Here's a link to one from 1909. (They've disabled embedding, it seems.)

sfhog.com has more pics of the 1400 Mission facade. It looks very glassy and sleek, quite nice.
