It's a sculpture, a work of art. Not so much a structure. The mountain was not built, it was carved.

If you really want to get representative, I would add to this several buildings/structures symbolic of this counties history:

Anisazie (sic?) cliff dwellings in the American southwest.
Chahokia Mounds, a World Heritage Site in Collinsville, Illinois
Any prominate Effigy Mound site in the eastern US

(all are very indicative of ancient America)

Independence Hall, Philadelphia
War of 1812 Balitmore Harbor Fort (sorry don't recall the name)
Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC
Mackinaw Island, MI (talk about a place that is Americana, the whole thing is full of historic structures)

this thread is funny...
nyse? when i asked my friend in berlin what the nyse looked like, she had no idea. in fact, i made my list when talking to my german friends... i asked, when you think of america, what comes to mind.

i am curious about what people think of when they think of a country.

dan added some really good ones that i forgot about:
hoover damn
the hollywood sign
independence hall
castle at disneyworld

also, why do americas (mostly east coasters) always leave chicago out of the mix? i asked my friend in berlin, what do you think of when you think of america, and she said: new york, chicago, vegas, florida, california, and dallas. so i don't get why all the other american lists leave sears and hancock out... after all, sears is our tallest building...

Damn, our shit looks scary and draconian. Why can't we be the bad guys in hollywood? We certainly have the buildings for it.

No doubt Chicago is famous the world over. It has one of greatest and most recognizable skylines in the world. And I’m sure that many would recognize the Sears tower in a picture since it was the tallest for so long. But I think Chicagoans give too much importance to the Hancock Tower. I don’t think 70% of average America outside of Chicago could name it (and I think my estimates low) and it is almost unrecognizable in the rest of the world outside of the “architectural set”. When it does show up on a list that I think is questionable, inevitable it was posted by a Chicagoan. (which I don’t blame anybody, everyone from every city does it)

You asked and I’m just sharing my opinion.

But I would put Sear’s Tower on my list.

If your friend doesn't recognize this; then she is either a child, or an idiot:

In reference to another poster who stated he'd be surprised if 70% of Americans could name the Hancock Tower, he was absolutely wrong. I would be shocked--SHOCKED--if 10% of Americans could name Hancock. Probably much closer to 5%. Maybe 15% would recognize it as part of the Chicago skyline. Extrapolateng these numbers to the rest of the world leave Hancock off the top 50 list, let alone the top 10. Sears is more famous for having been the tallest so long, but still nowhere remotely close to Lady Liberty or the White House. Probably top 20.

what the fuck? the nyse is extremely non-recognizable. it blends in with every other neo-classical p.o.s ever built. just because it's the stock exchange, doesn't mean people know what it looks like...

without looking up a picture of it, do you know what the tokyo stock exchange looks like?
come on dude...
