Ok, I'm ready to rock and roll and start my bike commuting. Going to try and do every other day to start. Starting tomorrow, then Saturday, and finally settling into Mon-Wed-Fri for my schedule.

Bike commuting day 1 has begun. Left home around 6:35, here is my route:

-12th avenue east
-connect to the elbow/bow bike path around Fort Calgary
-take the bridge to the zoo
-connect to the memorial pathway east
-north on the nose creek pathway
-cross deerfoot on the bridge before 32nd avenue
-12th street north to 32nd avenue

Took about 30 minutes this morning.

I hope you have an awesome first day bike commuting! Did you pick up a fender yet? I know someone else that just started bike commuting two weeks ago for the first time as well along the same route from City Centre to 32 Ave via zoo trail... takes about 20 minutes, and exercise neways so it just became a better lifestyle fit!

No fender yet, I do have a small bag on the back that covers most of the rear wheel, so that helps with any splashback.

Bike commuting update: Filled my tires up here again at work, thought I was being careful with the pressure, but I blew out my back tire. Got a co-worker to drive me over to Tuxedo and they are giving me a new one. Also picked up a new pump with a gauge so I don't do something so stupid again.

Good call. I have gotten three flats while doing pretty big rides. Not because of pressure, but because an actual puncture. Getting stuck halfway around Glenmore reservoir with a punctured tire with no spare tube sucks. That reminds me, I really need to get a spare tube.

This was actually my first flat, and not even while riding. Guess I've been lucky.

I must be too much of a map junkie, because I didn't read a single word- I just looked at the map at the end of the report. Doesn't seem very provacative to me.

I noticed on the map there is going to be a new crossing of the Bow river just west of Prince's island park. It is suppose to open sometime between 2011 and 2014.

Haha, you noticed that too eh? In fairness that time frame relates to both the Peace Bridge and the new East Village bridge, so that is why I'm assuming they put 2011-2014. If we're lucky the Peace bridge will be open by then!

After reading the report, I think I feel comfortable that I can commute every day of the year by bike. This report seems like they are really trying to target some of the barriers to access including snow removal in winter, and addressing safety concerns.

One of the things that I didn't think was necessary at first was the public bike share thing. To me this just seems like a fad for tourists. If people really want a bike can rent a proper one, have a folding bike, or have one at home. I don't want the public subsidizing bikes, because the majority of the time I have a bike with me, and can get cheap bikes at everything from garage sales to bikeswap events. Reading a bit deeper into this though it seems like this is a sponsor and partnership program at an annual cost of $425,000 a year which is reimbursed. I'm cool with this if it funded by a sponsor, but I don't want think it's needed that the City of Calgary take on the liability of trying to fund something like this.

My last bike I gave away for free.

The city decided to build a proper pathway link from the pathway along Nose Hill Drive to the Crowfoot LRT station, something that should have been done a while ago, but its pretty much built and ready for use now so you no longer have to walk through Crowfoot or across just grass to get to the station from the east

I know there is already a Car2go thread with some articles, but I figured car sharing is 'alternative transportation'. In fact Mersar maybe you'd like to merge the car2go thread with this one?

Anyway, I discovered today that although the northern limit of the zone where you can end a rental is 16th ave NW, I was able to successfully end one a couple of spots away from 17th ave NW. No further though, attempting to end between 17th and 18th was denied.
