We've known about this for a couple of years now, but it is gratifying to see that this project continues to slowly wend it's way through the system.

This will be a full fledged regional prison hospital, serving all of Atlantic Canada, but based at the Dorchester Penitentiary. It will mostly be involved with chronic and palliative care, clinics, diagnostics and will have a heavy focus on mental health and inpatient psychiatric services.

What was once home to a well-known Sackville diner has received a new coat of paint, a new menu … and a robot.

Mel's Tea Room has been transformed into Oh! Chicken, a Korean fried chicken restaurant.

The restaurant that now occupies the former Mel's location is owned by Paul Ahn, who also owns the Asian fusion restaurant Song's Chopsticks just across the street.

I wonder if this is the first robot waiter in the province???

Sackville Bowling first opened in 1939, meaning it predates both the Vogue Cinema, which has been for sale since the summer, and the former Mel’s Tea Room, which is now transformed into new restaurant, Oh Chicken!

Things are very quiet in Sackville these days............

This is essentially an interior forklift upgrade, but retaining the essential characteristics of the building with some visible cosmetic and structural changes on the outside.

The five-year project comes with an estimated cost of $85 million which includes the construction of a temporary library behind the athletics centre.

"We are keeping the atrium. We know that's very important to people, but we're basically starting from the ground up and some of the exciting things will be a new entrance from York Street."

She said the current building lacks enough power outlets, quiet study and gathering spaces, and updated technology in classrooms and labs.

In the summer of 2024, construction of an on-campus interim library will begin. This location will later be converted into a multipurpose athletic complex upon the completion of the library renovation in the summer of 2029.

This is the (mostly) unstated bonus of this project - an expansion of the athletic complex with the construction of a new multipurpose facility.

Rubin says the remodelled library will also enclose the breezeway that connects it to the Crabtree building.

The library's café will move to the enclosed breezeway, which will also have flexible furniture and more lights, making it a gathering space for the community to attend book talks, faculty readings and other events.

Sackville is quite sleepy compared to it's exurban cousin (Shediac), but, this MTA library/athletic centre refurbishment, and the new six storey Lafford apartment building under construction overlooking the Waterfowl Park are two substantial developments for the town.

The library renovation will include space for studying, socializing and feature a data management lab, as well as an entrepreneurship lab. It will have more natural light and will be accessible for all students. T&T photo

Rubin said the renovations will allow them to display items from their archives and special collections. They will also be looking at permanent art displays, including Indigenous art, and library staff will be working with the campus art gallery on temporary exhibits.

Downtown Sackville loses another building

10-14 York Street, the building next to the former Joey’s Pizza and Pasta, was demolished on Thursday and is now a large pile of rubble.

The building sustained smoke and water damage during the April 2023 fire that destroyed the neighbouring Joey’s building, another part of the Hanson Block, built in 1927.

10-14 York has been home to a number of businesses over the years, and at the time of the Joey’s fire, Estheva Spa and Live Bait Theatre occupied the two storefronts.

The building is owned by Moncton restauranteur Sam Kim, who owns Kimganae Korean BBQ on Mountain Road. Kim told CHMA that he is still in the planning stages of replacing the building, but he expects eventually to build a similar structure with commercial space on the ground floor and apartments upstairs.

Despite the sombre tone of the title of the article, the main takeaway I have is that the owner of the property plans to rebuild a similar structure with ground level commercial and apartments overhead. This is good news! I sincerely hope that a new restaurant can be lured to become part of the project. I really liked Joey's and would often eat there when I was in Sackville, and I know it was popular with the MTA students. Another pizzeria would be great! If not, I see that the property owner also runs Kimganae Korean BBQ on Mountain Road in Moncton. Perhaps he is considering a branch in Sackville too.........

The old Enterprise foundry in Sackville is being demolished, primarily because it has become a safety hazard. There are no immediate plans for the property.

When I was a lad, we had an Enterprise Foundry oil stove in our kitchen. It was the only source of heat for the back end of the house, and was always on. I would sometimes hang out in the rocking chair by the stove to warm my feet. You young pups out there probably think this means I was born in the stone age..........

A bright orange replica of the General Lee that was wrecked during a 163-foot jump in front of the Moncton Coliseum last Friday has been purchased by a Moncton businessman who plans to put it on display.

He is working toward a new business in Sackville that will be called the Hillbilly Haven Ranch. That business is still in development, but he believes the bright orange replica of the General Lee will become part of the decor in the new store in Sackville.
