Hotel Building Boom Continues
Posted: Sep 23, 2013 1:45 PM EDT Updated: Sep 23, 2013 1:57 PM EDT

By Paul Wagner -

Erie's hotel building boom is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, two more hotels are now taking shape in Summit Township.

A $4.5 million Baymont Inn is scheduled to open next spring along Route 97 near Presque Isle Downs. The casino will operate and manage the 118 room property.

And a 77 room Home-2-Hilton hotel is due to open later this year on Oliver Road just off upper Peach Street.

VisitErie believes more tourism advertising will help to fill the additional rooms.

Chris Pennsy of VisitErie said, "Well obviously we are promoting overnight stays and we are doing a lot to promote our overnight packages and things like that. So the goal is to get them in for 1-2 nights and that will obviously benefit the hoteliers."

The addition of the 2 hotels will increase the number of local rooms to about 4600. That is up from 3,000 a decade ago
