Jean Nouvel Wins Pritzker Prize

From the Official Pritzker Prize website:

Jean Nouvel of France
Becomes the 2008
Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate

.....In announcing the jury’s choice, Thomas J. Pritzker, chairman of The Hyatt
Foundation, quoted from the jury citation, “Of the many phrases that might be used
to describe the career of architect Jean Nouvel, foremost are those that emphasize his
courageous pursuit of new ideas and his challenge of accepted norms in order to stretch
the boundaries of the field.” And further, Pritzker added, “The jury acknowledged the
‘persistence, imagination, exuberance, and, above all, an insatiable urge for creative
experimentation’ as qualities abundant in Nouvel’s work”.....

French Architect Wins Pritzker Prize
By ROBIN POGREBIN
Published: March 31, 2008

Jean Nouvel, the bold French architect known for such wildly diverse projects as the muscular Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and the exotically louvered Arab World Institute in Paris, has received architecture’s top honor, the Pritzker Prize.....

meh, I'd rather see Gang or K&S get some. Homegrowns first. Though, if developers want to import, Nouvel would be acceptable (unless of course, he wants to begin defininging himself in the Chicago tradition).

^Well, normally I'd agree with you. But his MOMA project is just too wicked bad (in a good way) for him not to build here. He is organic, pragmatic & programmatic enough to do Chicago proud.

Kamin's write-up for the Chicago Tribune:

Pritzker Architecture Prize goes to Jean Nouvel

Jean Nouvel, the boldly experimental French architect who shaped the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and other buildings that simultaneously respond to their surroundings and transform them, on Sunday was named this year’s winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, his field’s highest honor.

So this is a general prize, rather than an award for one specific work?
He has an interesting portfolio. I do love his NYC supertall proposal the best though.

Frenchman Jean Nouvel was designated the winner of the Pritzker Prize, Sunday March 30, in Los Angeles. Nouvel's Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis really is amazing. The cantilever known as the "endless bridge" is 178 feet long and two stories tall. They advertise it as the world's largest inhabitable cantilever. It houses a bar...

The engineers said it was like sticking an 18-story building out a window.

This shot is by forumer DFWCRE8TIVE from the Dallas forum:

This is from Wikipedia:

And what I really love about Torre Agbar is that the skin of the building shifts its colors throughout the day.

^ Is that the building with the fancy mechanical louvers? Those are bad-ass, too bad they keep breaking down.

As much as I love Nouvel and believe he is deserving of the Pritzker, I really don't understand how anybody could love the Guthrie Museum. It looks like an expensive Ikea.
