It looks like they are painting the concrete. That seems unusual.

Actually, it is not. Most exterior concrete receives a coating (not paint), unless it is specified as architectural concrete, which requires a lot more care in getting a good finish and proper texture, and is therefor a lot more expensive.

I can only think of a few major architectural concrete features on Austin's buildings. The north side of Seaholm Residences is almost entirely architectural concrete, and the ends of The Catherine are too.

I didn't realize that the concrete would be exposed to the exterior. So that makes sense.

Looking at the photo again, I think that is actually stucco, not concrete. Just below the 'painted' surface, you can see a concrete column (exposed at the parking podium) extending up under the 'concrete' they are 'painting'.

Good angle here showing its progress. It looks to be right at 300 feet.

I was by here recently and something seemed comical about that protective platform above the Roosevelt Room. Of all the small, older buildings that could have been spared the proverbial wrecking ball, why that one?! It's an unremarkable, even dowdy, edifice - nothing against the bar itself.

I didn't take a pic, but was on the east side last night and this one is starting to stand out over there. At first I didn't realize what it was, I didn't think it would be so visible, but it is and it's starting to look big already

Not the best pics but you can see it between the Bank of America tower and the Independent.

Because the Roosevelt room is one of the only good bars in the city and it would be a shame to displace it, even if temporarily.

I'd be shocked if that's the real reason. Developers rarely show that kind of scruples.

Unlike many bars, The Roosevelt Room actually owns their building. The developers were interested in buying it at some point, but RR decided not to sell for whatever reason.

Hanover tried to buy the Roosevelt Room building and even filed a demo permit for it. But the owners wouldn't sell.

It's too bad SPIN couldn't hold on. This place would have sent a lot of customers their way once it's occupied.
