East coast most influential cities.

I have a question concerning the East Coast.. outside of NYC, what is seen as the order of the major cities as they are seen globally. I am speaking global influence, culture, tourism, skyline profile, business growth, etc. I would say, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, in that orders. Also Hartford and Providence 2nd tier in that order.

how far down the coast would you still consider "east coast?"

Miami would have to be on the list. and Jacksonville, naturally.

Offhand, I came up with the same exact list. I would add that these would be for the extreme western part of the East coast, goes without saying.

D.C should obviously be No. 1. Boston is doing well in the tech industry and Atlanta is still a massive business and transportation hub. After those two, Miami and Philly.

The entire east coast? #2 is either D.C. or Miami. Probably Miami if we're talking cultural influence, but both have legitimate claims. #4 is Boston. #5 is Atlanta. #6 is Philadelphia.

Per GAWC:
Alpha++: NY
Alpha: Miami
Alpha-: DC
Beta+: Atlanta, Boston
Beta: Philadelphia
Gamma: Baltimore, Charlotte, Tampa
Gamma-: Orlando
Sufficiency+: Hartford, Raleigh
Sufficiency: Jacksonville, Richmond
Unlisted: Norfolk, Albany

Cities like Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Rochester, Nashville I'm not calling east coast for this thread, but you can look them up if you want.

IMO GAWC is pretty on target but undervalues institutional influence a little. DC should swap with Miami, and Norfolk should get a Sufficiency+ (but maybe that's just the homer in me speaking, so I'm not going to argue about it with anyone). For the tiers with more than one city (which are listed alphabetically), I'd peg:

Beta+ should have Boston above Atlanta
Gamma should be Tampa then Charlotte than Baltimore
Sufficiency+ and below should be Raleigh, Norfolk, Hartford, Providence, Richmond, Albany, Jacksonville

Bayonne, NJ is a clear #1, except in regards to presence of wealthy, aged WASPs, in which case Darien, CT wins.

If we're trying to include a city from every state, then Boston is in Vermont and New Hampshire, too, and Philly and New York are also both in New Jersey. Portland, ME, should be at the bottom of the list. And of course everyone knows that Delaware is just a conceptual state, in the same way that corporations are conceptual persons, so can't actually even have a city since it doesn't exist in the real world.

Atlanta counts as an East Coast city? It's a straight line down from Cincinnati and Detroit, so I guess they are also on the East Coast. You learn something everyday on SSP.

but the east coast slants west as it goes south.

distance to nearest saltwater:

atlanta: ~230 miles

cincinnati: ~400 miles

detroit: ~400 miles

that said, atlanta doesn't immediately register as "east coast" in my mind, in a smiliar way that pittsburgh doesn't register as "east coast" for me either.

Baltimore is unquestionably among the most influential east coast cities. After all, it hosts the university that gets more federal research dollars than any other by far. Nobody would know what that chunk of rock in the Kuyper belt looks like without Baltimore:

"On the East Coast" to me means exclusively Northeast Corridor. "Entire east coast" would roughly include Atlanta, and cities in most states touching the Atlantic. Buffalo and Pittsburgh are notable exceptions to the rule.
