The population thread to end all population threads

For starters, all numbers were calculated using the current city proper populations and annual growth rates (2006 census)

Current Populations:
Regina: 179,246
Saskatoon: 202,340
Brandon: 41,511
Winnipeg: 633,451
Calgary: 988,193
Edmonton: 730,372
Thunder Bay: 109,140

Growth rates:
Regina: 0.12% per year
Saskatoon: 0.56% per year
Brandon: 0.90% per year
Winnipeg: 0.44% per year
Calgary: 2.48% per year
Edmonton: 1.92% per year
Thunder Bay: 0.02% per year

POPULATIONS IN 2020
Regina: 182,062 (+2,186)
Saskatoon: 217,576 (+15,236)
Brandon: 46,639 (+5,128)
Winnipeg: 670,657 (+37,206)
Calgary: 1,358,783 (+370,590)
Edmonton: 935,225 (+204,853)
Thunder Bay: 109,424 (+284)

POPULATIONS IN 100 YEARS
Regina: 202,084 (+22,838)
Saskatoon: 353,677 (+151,337)
Brandon: 101,690 (+60,179)
Winnipeg: 982,617 (+349,166)
Calgary: 11,448,565 (+10,460,372)
Edmonton: 4,891,975 (+4,161,603)
Thunder Bay: 111,345 (+2,205)

MY CITY WILL REACH 300,000 IN THE YEAR...
Regina: 2436 (429 years)
Saskatoon: 2077 (70 years)
Brandon: 2227 (220 years)
Winnipeg: ---
Calgary: ---
Edmonton: ---
Thunder Bay: 7063 (5056 years)

MY CITY WILL REACH 1,000,000 IN THE YEAR...
Regina: 3440 (1,333 years)
Saskatoon: 2293 (286 years)
Brandon: 2362 (355 years)
Winnipeg: 2110 (103 years)
Calgary: ---
Edmonton: 2023 (16 years)
Thunder Bay: 13083 (11,076 years)

CALGARY WILL REACH 100,000,000 IN THE YEAR...
2195

MY CITY WILL PASS YOUR CITY IN...
- Brandon will surpass Winnipeg in the year 2603
- Brandon will surpass Saskatoon in the year 2476
- Brandon will surpass Regina in the year 2195
- Saskatoon will surpass Winnipeg in the year 2962

I know these numbers are rediculous, they're just for fun and to end all the silly population threads. I don't really think the current growth rates are going to remain for all those years, nor will Calgary top 100 million in less than 200 years
End of discussion

Mneh, your ridiculous figures assume a constant state of growth.

Your forgetting that one day Hydro is going to be king, baby! Then it will be the 'Peg's time to shine.

When you guys are all living in Winnipeg in 20?? we'll be able to have this debate in person.

^^ it was almost pointless to calculate Moose Jaw's numbers using the 2006 census, since they only grew by 0.000032% per year, or 0.2 people per year

but here it goes..

in 2020, Moose Jaw would be 32,125 (+2.6 people)
in 100 years: 32,152 (+20 people)

Moose Jaw will reach 300,000 in 1,337,333 years
Moose Jaw will reach 1,000,000 in 4,837,333 years

Using recent population changes are extremely misleading .. Calgary has enjoyed a large but most likely a very temporary blip in population. There are more and more news stories of Calgary companies looking to cutback .. more and more people looking at moving back home .. and a recent CIBC report projecting oil to fall to the mid 40's in 2008 .. in conclusion I predict there will be a rebalancing of population within the next few years. The days of $80/bbl are over .. and Calgary's temporary domanance are coming to an end.

Clean the carpets, paint the fences and cut the lawns Saskatchewan and Manitoba, because people will be returning home on mass.

C'mon, there will probably be a $500,000 bungalow with your name on it. You know you want to make the move.

While the city of Winnipeg hasn't enjoyed much growth over the last few decades the surrounding areas have had very strong growth rates .. and thus metro Winnipeg is growing at a fair rate. If you include the 40,000 people living just north of the city .. most of whom are not included in Winnipeg metro, but credited to greater Selkirk, the population projection would look even further out of touch. With that said I guess thats the magic of cenus numbers .. used to get acurate population breakdowns, but in reality very subjective.

Manitoba has a Capital Region which is nearing 800,000 people .. far from the 633,451.

One thing that might help Saskatoon's and Regina's and Winnipeg's population growth rate (besides rapid transit) is global warming. If all those citizens that live in places that will be under water or are near that stage move to the Canadian prairies ... voila ... instant rapid population growth that throws newflyer's numbers out the window.

They say that parts of Manhattan will be underwater.... If some of those people move to the 'Peg and they like living in BIG cities ... they'll be like the original settlers of Winnipeg ... they'll re-create an urban environment similar to the one they lost... complete with subways, hi-rise office buildings, etc...

That would be so cool to have a metro Winnipeg population of 5 million or more, just from all the refugees from New York City, Florida and the West Coast of Calif.

When there is no oil, natural gas and severe water shortages in Alberta in 25 years, Calgary and Edmonton will all but stop growing. (probably a lot sooner than that)
