Surprised nobody posted a picture of San Diego Chargers home - Qualcomm Stadium. They're in the news bc they might move to Carson, CA.

These parking ramps are the most integrated, useful parking ramps I have ever dealt with. In addition to what has already been mentioned about them, the ramps connect to the skyway, have their own on and off-ramps from the interstate, are near night clubs and the arenas/stadiums mentioned here, AND they are within a block or two of 4 major performing arts theaters seating nearly 7000 people.

So, yes, they are HUGE ramps. BUT, they provide a HUGE benefit to the people of the Twin Cities and they don't take up that much space while still being integrated into the downtown area and the transportation network. Unlike some of these lots (mainly the ones around sporting arenas/stadiums) which are used less than 10% of the year, these ramps are almost daily for a variety of events and venues.

(google maps)
When I lived in Minneapolis I had the displeasure of parking there a number of times. It has its own dedicated expressway exit, and, IIRC, also piggy-backs off of a second exit - that's how big it is.

Also in the Minneapolis area is the Mall of America, with massive garages (or "ramps" as they call them in Minneapolis) on both ends of the Mall in addition to surface parking across the streets:

From Stormfront.org

At least at the MoA, there is a light rail station that stops right next to the mall in the lower deck of the south garage so you no longer *have* to drive there.

Very nice - I especially love the plaza with the scale reproduction/monument of the Burj Khalifa ...

They used to.

.

Toronto also used to have some pretty big surface lots right downtown because of the wave of destruction that was the 60's and 70's. Thankfully they've mostly been developed since.

I recall reading that Tokyo Disney had one of the biggest parking lots in all of Japan, though I'm not sure what the other contenders are. For Japan, it's quite a large set of lots, though:

O'hare International Airport's main parking garage is stupid-huge, especially driving up to it.

The entire length doesn't even fit in this photo (that's the facade of the garage in front of the Hilton hotel):

I got lost in it briefly about 25 years ago trying to find my car; fortunately, I realized I was on the wrong floor, directly below where my car was actually parked.

^^^ That's just the main garage - somebody with more time and skill than I should pull up the collection of surface lots to the N.

Toronto's airport parking garage holds 9,000 spots and is the largest in the city by far. The crazy part is that it is designed to be expanded.

http://www.multiseal.net/home/waterproofing/multiguard/

It also isn't the only garage at the airport, there is another extremely large garage built nearby for airport employees.

O man, I would hate to forget where I parked in that Toronto lot when its at full capacity.

The Port Newark car lot has to to be the largest I've seen in person.

OK, I was recently in Kansas City and went to a Royals game. When I left the game it must have taken me a half-hour to find my car. The spaces aren't numbered and the section markers on the lights in the parking lot are way too far apart to be very useful. One of the most insane experiences I've had in a while.

It's an art form to find where you parked, if you're not a frequent visitor to the Truman Sports Complex. They could do a better job with the section markers. That said, I'll take the sea of parking lots over parking garages any day. Without them, millions of dollars wouldn't be pumped into the economy each year due to the tailgating!!

I disagree. Tailgating isn't worth wasting that much land.

I think huge parking lots for sports stadiums are totally ok, as long as they are far, far away from the urban core.
