Zoo offers look at progress on Journey to Churchill exhibit

There's a 21.3-metre-long Sea Ice Passage where people can walk through a three-metre-wide acrylic tunnel surrounded by water and watch seals and polar bears, separated by a nearly invisible barrier, swimming overhead.

When the exhibit opens in June 2014, visitors will experience a variety of landscapes such as tundra, boreal forest and ice. There are jaw-dropping details such as natural barriers of water and artificial rock formations between animal species in the Wapusk Lowlands. A number of different animals can be seen at once from a single vantage point.

Just a small Snippet from the article above ^, nice video of the build!

I was at the Zoo a couple days ago -- it looks great, even with the construction making it a little hard to get around. The scale of the Journey to Churchill construction is really amazing. It's going to be a great tourist attraction. It's really the perfect size for a zoo. Fun to see zebras, lions, kangaroos, "Hudson" and others that were all out and about -- more so than in the summertime, I think.

Orphaned female cub arrives at zoo's polar bear centre

An orphaned polar bear cub from Churchill, a 38-kilogram female about 11 months old, has been transferred to Assiniboine Park Zoo. She will be the first female resident and the first orphaned cub at the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre.

Already residing at the polar bear facility are two male bears -- the 257-kilogram Hudson and the 128-kg, yet-to-be-named polar bear who arrived at the facility Oct. 9, also from Churchill. That bear had bitten a man in town, but was relocated rather than euthanized.

Journey to Churchill opens July 3, daily admission to go up again
Posted: 11:38 AM

Winnipeg’s Journey to Churchill is scheduled to get underway in July.

The much-anticipated exhibit at the Assiniboine Park Zoo will open to the public July 3, officials announced this morning. The $90-million exhibit will feature expansive new polar bear, arctic fox, muskox, snowy owl and seal habitats, as well as interactive interpretive components -- including an eight minute film experience inside Manitoba’s largest 360-degree theatre.

To prepare for the opening date, the zoo will be closed from June 23 - July 2. The zoo will reopen the next day at noon, with the unveiling of a new Roblin Boulevard entrance.

"Journey to Churchill is going to be spectacular and we want the entire zoo looking its absolute best," said Assiniboine Park Conservatory chief operations officer Don Peterkin in a statement. "Everything from paint touch-ups, to landscaping, to repair work, the small things really make a big difference. Plus, it’s also very important that we give the animals the proper amount of time to acclimatize to their new environments."

Officials also announced new daily admission pricing platforms and membership fees that will force patrons shell out a little more to see the newly-renovated zoo.

That will be the second increase this year. The Assiniboine Park Zoo raised its daily admission rates and its annual memberships as of April 1.

Starting on July 3, a daily adult admission fee will be $18.50, up from the current $10.24 price. Seniors (60-plus) and youth (13-17 years old) jump from $8.24 to $14.81, while children (3-12 years old) admission climbs from $6.62 to $10. Children under three get in free of charge.
Those prices do not include GST.

Annual membership rates have also increased, with a family membership jumping from $115 to $189; an adult fee goes up from $45 to $65; seniors and youth memberships see a $30 increase (from $25 to $55), while a children’s membership is $40 now ($30 when purchased with an adult pass).

Membership prices have been in effect since the start of April.

Zoo officials point out that the new admission rates are in line (and in many cases cheaper) than zoos and aquatic attractions across the country.

Those are some steep increases in price. 80% increase for adults, seniors and youth. Bit better for kids. Yearly membership rates for families increased by 65%, Adults increased by 44%, seniors and youths are dinged hard with a 120% increase and the children's membership is a paltry 33% increase.

Once the hype dies down after the first few years, it will be interesting to see what the annual attendance numbers look like based on paid gate admissions. Not sure if we are privy to that information though.

Long-term will we see a permanent increase in annual paid admissions? Will the possible drop-off in local paid admissions be offset by an increase from out-of-town visits? Will there be a significant decrease in senior visits considering their demographic is on the receiving end of the biggest price increase all while on a fixed income (most of them anyways)?

^ That is quite a lot considering that it was free up until a little over a decade ago. $20 an adult is definitely hitting the ceiling for what one might consider "affordable family entertainment". That puts us up there with Toronto and Calgary, but our zoo is not really in the same league as theirs are.

That's part of the problem. It was free. I know I'll be more inclined to attend. But like you guys said, will it last? I probably won't be going every single year. Maybe once every few years or so. Maybe.

^Thanks for the info! Puts things in perspective a bit. Although it doesn't outline what state of repair, or disrepair, each facility is in. But let's you know that you're not getting gauged.

It gives you a general idea of the care needed to house the amount of animals/species groups in comparison to a few of the zoo's across Canada increasing the costs accordingly. We've had it quite good here for a long time. The zoo as well as the entire park, as your aware of is currently in their 200M expansion/overhaul phase, increasing and updating the infrastructure in it's boundries. For Winnipeg it may seem high, but not compared to some of the facilities across Canada. Still quite reasonable in my opinion.
Kids, as mentioned earlier still have it quite well, the group that would most enjoy/learn from a day at the zoo.

I don't think it's reasonable. Maybe once the rest of the zoo is brought up to 1st class standards. But the cost of going is far out of reach of a lot of Winnipegers now. Perhaps if there was a basic charge and then something on top of that do do Journey to Churchill. Whoever set this price structure is out of touch with Winnipeg reality.

It is unfortunate that the prices had to rise so much in such a short period of time, but again, comparible if not better than most zoo admission fees across the country. It will affect some peoples decision to go like they used too.

Just a few things to keep in mind.

Assiniboine Park Conservancy CEO, Margaret Redmond, said the increase in admission fees is necessary to make the zoo self-sufficient.
The zoo’s operating budget was aided by a City of Winnipeg grant. With that agreement expiring, admissions alone will have to cover operating costs, starting in 2015.
“We have to make up approximately $4 million in revenues to offset that drop in public funding,” Redmond said.
-SunMedia
-------
Funding for the zoo has changed, too. Where once the zoo relied on tax dollars for 75 cents of every operating dollar, government money makes up just 35 cents these days, leaving admission rates and other charges to make up the biggest chunk of revenue.

Really? The NEW charge for the zoo is about the same as a movie ticket at Silver City at Polo Park, movie lasts two hours but you can walk around the zoo all day. Not directed at you King but what planet are some of you guys on, $18. for zoo admission too much, wow!
