Apartment buildings tend to be the worse because they're visually cluttered by nature. Those modernist office buildings are fantastic though.

These are great modern towers: Embarcadero Center

It must be the proportions and height ratios that make them so appealing to me. Much more intriguing than the "refrigerator boxes" I posted before.

This is the most hideous thing on this thread.

The Fox tower in the OP and that Van Ness Holiday Inn also get props.

But meh, all those other buildings look like products of their times. I think that the fact there are so many of them in one city makes them kind of boring, but not a single one of them is really godawfully ugly. The Hilton even looks pretty cool.

The entire block should be demolished--including the bank on the corner!

Many people over the years have said that the Fox San Francisco was the finest theatre ever built. I've posted this before--talk a look at William Swain's pics at the bottom of "the building" tab. From the highest auditorium ceiling, to the largest proscenium arch and the tallest organ chambers, this place was amazing. Unfortunately, it was gone by the time that I first came to the City.

Look also at the booklet "San Francisco's Foolish and Fabulous Fox" under the "Fox collections" tab. There are some great behind the scenes and mechanical pics. What a tragedy that this was demolished; all the more troubling was that the supports were already in place for a midrise building to be constructed over and around it.
