Those columns are absolutely necessary. They support the building's flux capacitor.

There are a lot of buildings with that design - typically on the open amenities levels. It seems to be a 2020s design trend.

The Specific heights for the U/C Rainey towers:

500' River Street Residences (Apts.)
567' Paseo (Apts.)
594' Travis (Apts.)
658' Modern Austin (condos)
1,022' Waterline (Apts., office & hotel)

In addition to those, the 452' Vesper condo tower opened about a week ago.

There is also a proposed ~800' Ritz-Carlton hotel and condo project that looks highly doubtful at this point, and a ~700' condo tower named 62 East that is still going through permitting.

I would say that is mostly the case with large projects. But there is no formal plan to do so.

Also the angle of the first photo in Urbannizer's batch of pics... holy cow! It's a whole new Austin (especially lit at night)!!
