To me, there are several categories that

~ Church of place of worship
~ School or university
~ Civic building: city hall, courthouse
~ Other public building: library, etc
~ Industrial or factory
~ House or residence
~ Office building
~ Retail
~ Restaurant or bar
~ Other commercial: bank, etc
~ Stadium or arena
~ Other types?

This, the Garden Court dining room/lounge of the Palace Hotel, is one of my favorite indoor spaces in SF. I used to take my Mom to afternoon tea here whenever she visited:

And this, the Herbst Theater, is my favorite small performance space in SF:

It's the perfect place for chamber music recitals.

^^^ Nice. SF has quite a few buildings that are in the Beaux Arts style.

Last time I visited NYC, I took some photos of two of the major cathedrals in Manhattan, St.Patrick’s and St. John the Divine. Grand Central is great, as well as the new WTC station. I’ll see if I can post some from Flickr of those places.

I was impressed with the Idaho Statehouse interior when I first visited.

One thing I also hear a lot from clients and friends who visit for the first time is how squeaky-clean and nice the Boise airport is, as well, especially compared to other smaller airports:

The main entry of the airport also features a nice terrazzo:

Chicago has spent entirely too much of its history trying to build the most ornate domes and atriums and lobbies.

here's another spectacular chicago atrium that's actually in danger of possibly being demolished.

seriously?!? they just fricking BUILT that thing!

I know it was controversial when it was built (both the design and the HVAC issues), but IMO, it's become iconic.

The Thompson Center is actually 35 years old now.

the building has become a bit of a white elephant, it apparently needs untold millions in deferred maintenance costs, and the eternally cash-strapped state of illinois (the owner) no longer wants it and intends to sell the property to a developer who might demolish the building and redevelop an entire city block in the heart of chicago's loop (a pretty rare opportunity).

of course, preservationists, and even the building's original architect Helmut Jahn, are already sounding the alarm to preemptively head-off any potential demo plans, but we'll see what happens. chicago is no stranger to ripping down its landmark architectural treasures.

35 years seems like yesterday to me, I guess. heck, when I was born, the One Prudential building still dominated the skyline.

see? isn't this beautiful?!?
