How long will the Saskatchewan boom last?

How long do you think the 'boom' will last? (housing boom, resources, etc)

Well, were already into like the 3rd year of the boom. It depends on if we let the oil companies do to us what they did to alberta.

Unless the price of oil drops $20-$30 in a few hours, along with the price of Uranium, Diamonds, and almost every other natural resource. I doubt the boom will be that short-lived

When these things end, it's fast and unforeseen.

Can't find anything better to do in the big city than troll prairie forums? That's kind of sad.

Well, being that he's from Toronto, he has to downplay somebody to make himself feel better, might aswell go for the smallest of the lot.

Andy, I suggest attacking Calgary, you know you're bigger and bette than them, and they are still in the prairies!

I'm from Winnipeg actually. And pointing out that a commodity-based boom isn't likely to last isn't "attacking Saskatchewan". I'm not predicting any kind of boom in Toronto either, if that makes you feel better.

Well the boom in Alberta seems to have lasted longer than a couple of hours.

I figure that Saskatchewan with its excessive amount of oil, diamonds, uranium, etc will see the same benefits.

Building your economy solely on natural resources is a prescription for future disaster. If Saskatchewan can take the proceeds of its resource wealth and use that to diversify, it will position itself nicely.

Hard to say how long it can go, depends on a number of external factors. The fate of oil and gas will be determined by government policy on climate change, vehicle technology, etc. uranium same thing, if there's a greater push towards non-coal sources of electricity.

I'd give it a few more years, but I would say Sask is in better shape than Alta because it's resource wealth does not lie in one sector.

The Alberta boom is quickly fizzing out. It was nice while it lasted. Housing prices are coming down .. and there is more for sale signs going up very week.

It seems you guys may only benefit from the tail end of this phase. In Calgary many companies are starting to cut back on projects... and with the new royalty tax that will effect future spending.

Thanks for the boost of confidence, newflyer, but Saskatchewan isn't a one horse economy. Unlike Oilberta we do offer other products to the World.

Don't get me wrong .. I think Saskatchewan has a much more diversified economy than Alberta... the Uranium and Ag industries are also doing very well.

This reeks of little brother taking shots at big brother. Talk to me when you have economic output greater than southwest Calgary.

Boom fizzling out? You base this erroneous statement on the fact that housing prices have levelled out?

Your comments are referring to Alta, not Sask - where's the relevance? As far as projects being shelved I would like to see some cited backup to this claim. Also, you can provide documentation that the new roayalty tax is going to hinder proposed construction when in fact the proposal hasn't even been presented yet? Edmonton/Calgary Sun articles don't count.

Unsubstantiated fear-mongering at its best/worst.

I can think of at least one company which has moved all of its exploration from Alberta to Saskatchewan.
