A Walk Around Calgary in March

Seeing as I don't see many Calgary photos in this section, I decided to post some of own. While not a sample of my best, these are all from the same day and mostly in chronological order from about a two-hour walk. The weather last weekend when I took these was balmy for March, the light harsh and the scenery brown and dirty, but a nice day is always a good day for snapping some pictures.

I started out downtown, then worked my way east to Calgary's desolate and depressing East Village, which will hopefully see some rejuvenation while I'm still alive. I then crossed the river to Bridgeland, which has seen a lot of construction activity on a former hospital site (it was imploded in '98) and then I ended off the walk with some pictures of downtown atop Crescent Hill.

Enjoy!

The building with the Lennon mural will be demolished soon:

How this house has survived almost a century in downtown Calgary is beyond me:

The arch is remnants from an original 1888 building along with the replacement building that is slated for demolition:

The new Calgary Coutrs Centre:

Recently restored:

Same here:

The police headquarters building will demolished eventually but not for a while yet:

The main library branch is slated for replacement by the end of the decade:

Calgary's ugliest building as far as I'm concerned:

And now we enter the East Village:

This old hotel will likely be renovated

The good ol' St Louis Hotel will be fixed up eventually as well:

City Hall effectively shuts out the East Village from downtown, leading to years of neglect to the neighbourhood:

These lofts, on the left, are a more recent addition to the area but provide much juxtaposition to the lots beside it, which include a few newly demolished run-down houses:

Senior's complex:

One of the city's homeless shelters, bursting at the seams:

Now, we're coming up to Bridgeland:

The site of the former General Hospital:

A reminder of the not so distant past:

And finally, up on Crescent Hill:

Nice shots. Yeah, so much potential wasted so far in the east village. I am optimistic though that some day it will become something really special.

This is an interesting shot. Three eras of buildings.

early 20th century church. 60s/70s concrete office. Brand new Mondrian inspired office. Very cool.

This is also a cool little modern injection into downtown. It took forever to actually build, but I like how it is turning out.

Cheers

I hate the paint job. What an abomination. The concrete was awesome. A material to behold on its own merits.

How about the podium (if you can even call it that) on that sucker! That thing would have been a heck of a lot shorter if not for the above-grade parkade...

Yeah I noticed that they've working on this for the longest time but it's coming along nice...Sure can't remember what was there originally.

the bridges (is that what it's called?) is by far the best new residential development in calgary. it's perfectly mixed-use and brilliantly-scaled. i especially love the laneways:

As much as I lamented the loss of an inner-city hospital for years, the Bridges is a great new development that didn't get screwed up along the way. As in, they did a great job of it...

Yeah, the photographed areas are not exactly the hotbed of pedestrian traffic in Calgary.

As for the Bridges, it is really, really well done. Can't wait to see the second phase projects. They are more dense then the first phase as they are located immediately adjacent to the LRT. 8-12 storey buildings. They should all be released soon.
