I'm not sure as to the crime rate as a whole, but the amount of random crime in the city is definitely increasing. That's a stat you definitely don't want high.
wow! yeah that's the one you do not want to rise :S

It's too bad. At least the random crimes resulting in death are still exceptionally rare here - they mostly result in comparatively minor injuries or no bodily harm at all.

I think such types of crime are a symptom of substance abuse. Once your city gets into those really awful drugs, like meth or whatever... addicts will do anything to get it. Cigarettes, weed, booze, etc. generally don't generate the same desperation and the crimes related to them tend to be non-violent.

Armed Robberies Connected: RNC

RNC believe two armed robberies in St. John's and Mount Pearl may be connected. Marie's Mini Mart on Stavanger Drive was held up just before 10:00 last night. A man, who was wearing a mask, entered the shop with a knife, and demanded cigarettes and cash before fleeing the scene. The person is described about 5'5" to 5'6" tall with a tiny build. RNC say he was described as wearing a tan jacket, black sweat pants, and a ski mask. There were no injuries during the robbery.

The second robbery happened at 10:30 at Barbours Convenience on Holden Street in Mount Pearl. Three masked men, one of whom was armed with a weapon, entered the store and demanded cash and cigarettes before fleeing. RNC say one suspect was wearing a blue plaid jacket, another wore a brown work jacket and the third wore an orange jacket with reflective stripes.

Anyone with information on the robberies is asked to call RNC or Crime Stoppers.

Agreed on both points. I can't ever remember a death following a random crime, though at some point it's probably bound to happen if the random crime rate doesn't start decreasing. But as you said, meth heads/heroin junkies will reach new levels of desperation which your typical alcoholic/Ritalin junkie wouldn't.

All you can do is keep your wits about you. If I survived the Bronx I can probably survive Buckmaster

Cops nab suspect, search for others in gas bar robberies

Police in St. John's brought one man into custody and were looking for two others after a couple of gas bars were robbed in different neighbourhoods of the city overnight.

An Ultramar station on New Gower Street was held up shortly after 11 p.m. on Wednesday night.

The RNC tracked down a suspect in an abandoned building on Henry Street, also in downtown St. John's.

Around 2:20 a.m. Thursday, two men held up an Irving station at the intersection of Torbay Road and Pearson Street.

Officers found a knife that was used in the robbery, but have not yet located the suspects.

The thieves stole cash and "a quantity of other store items" during the robbery, the RNC said in a statement.

No one was hurt.

Arrests in Armed Robberies in Metro

There were arrests in St. John's yesterday in connection with separate armed robberies - one last Sunday, the other shortly before 6:00 last evening at a Family Drug Mart on Portugal Cove Road. The 42-year-old accused was armed with a knife and demanded drugs. He was arrested at the scene and charged with armed robbery and weapons offences.

The robbery last Sunday was at an Esso station on Newfoundland Drive. That suspect was also armed with a knife and demanded cash before fleeing the scene. The 42-year-old accused is charged with armed robbery and other offences.

Police haven't said if it's the same man involved in both robberies. Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact RNC or Crime Stoppers.

Armed Robbery in St. John's

There was another armed robbery in the St. John's region last night, at an Orange store and service station on Pennywell Road. Police say the bandit hit the facility shortly before 10 p.m., and got away with some cash, lottery tickets, and cigarettes. There were no injuries and no arrests yet.

It was a busy night for the Constabulary in the greater St John's region with 200 calls for service and a number of arrests including a 32-year-old man charged in connection with a crash on Park Avenue in Mount Pearl late yesterday afternoon. RNC say a vehicle left the street and roared into a driveway, hitting a parked vehicle. No injuries but both vehicles were extensively damaged. The accused has been charged with impaired and is being held for court.

And a 27-year-old man nabbed at a traffic safety stop on Commonwealth Avenue in Mount Pearl last night is facing a number of charges including driving without a valid license, no insurance, expired registration, failure to transfer ownership, and false plates. The vehicle was impounded.

Police in Lab West nabbed a couple of impaired drivers overnight - one going the wrong way on a one-way street, the other for erratic driving. Both men are from Quebec and were given seven day driving suspensions.

Interesting to note....for as bad of a reputation Buckmaster Circle has this looks to be the first serious crime committed in that general area this year.

Not surprised at all. There are a lot of newcomers there now and they typically don't have the same social problems as our local lower class. It's a very changed neighbourhood.

Yeah I've heard that a lot about the "bad" areas in town, like Shea Heights and such. The neighborhoods have cleaned up nicely and that they aren't near as bad as they used to be back in the 70s-80s.

Yeah. Shea Heights doesn't have many newcomers, but lots of middle class folks have built up there in recent years.

Two Armed Robbers Hold up Mini Mart

Crime took no holiday this Thanksgiving weekend. The RNC have two armed robberies under investigation as the week begins, the most recent happening last evening around 6:45 on Elizabeth Avenue in the capital city. Two suspects, their faces covered, entered the Marie's Mini-Mart in the Churchill Square area and, armed with a knife, made off with a quantity of cash and some cigarettes. The pair escaped on foot. The K-9 Unit was called in but with no success. No one was injured in the robbery.

Meanwhile, the RNC are looking for the public's help in tracking down the suspect who held up a gas bar and convenience store on Pennywell Road Saturday night. The suspect entered the Orange Store around 10 and got away with some cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes. There were no injuries in that robbery.

A description of the suspect has not yet been released but if anyone has any information on either of these crimes they are asked to call the Constabulary or Crimestoppers.

Sudden Death at Cemetery: Police Won't Link Incident to Double Shooting

Quote:
The double homicide in Conception Bay South last night appears to be coming to some sort of resolution. RNC are now doing two investigations - one in relation to the homicides, and another related to a sudden death at the Anglican Cemetery on Kenmount Road. Barricades have been set up and there is a police presence at the graveyard.

RNC say there is now a scaled back presence in Conception Bay South where a man and a woman were shot to death last night at about 7:10. The shooting took place at the Villa Nova Plaza.

The police investigation brought them to a home on Chaytor's Road in CBS this morning, where police surrounded a shed, but RNC say that situation was not a stand off. Police were later called to the Anglican Cemetery on Kenmount Road. RNC say the two murder victims and the person of interest were all known to each other, and there is no threat to public safety.

Police won't say if the sudden death at the cemetery is connected to last night's murders.

Villa Nova Junior High, Topsail Elementary and Holy Spirit High School in CBS will reopen to class this afternoon. The decision to close the schools was made by school board officials following last night's double shooting at the Villa Nova Plaza. A school board spokesperson says the decision was made based on information provided by the RNC this morning, who were still searching for a person of interest in connection with the murders.

The schools will reopen to classes this afternoon at times to be announced by the schools through their websites.

The CBS Town Council was told of the shooting while it was in the middle of its public council meeting at the town hall, which is next to the plaza. Mayor Ken McDonald says it's difficult to believe that such a thing could happen in Conception Bay South. He says thankfully this sort of thing is very rare. He says he wants to assure people that the community is safe, despite the tragedy.

The Mayor spoke with VOCM's Brian Madore.

Pair arrested after St. John's armed robbery

Police held two men in custody overnight after an armed robbery at a St. John's convenience store, the second robbery at the same location in a week.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary caught two suspects not long after an armed robbery was reported at a Marie's Mini-Mart on Elizabeth Avenue, near Churchill Square on Sunday night.

Two men, 29 and 34, were being held for a provincial court appearance on charges that include armed robbery, wearing a mask with the intent of committing a crime, and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Witnesses told CBC News that two men entered the store before 8 p.m., and then fled from the scene.

Police have not disclosed what the alleged weapon was, nor what was stolen.
