Bank robbed in St. John's

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says someone with a knife robbed a Bank of Montreal branch on Elizabeth Avenue in St. John's just after noon on Monday.

A police spokesperson said investigators believe it was a man, but the person's face was masked and he or she wore a black-hooded jacket.

The thief demanded cash, ran off with an undisclosed amount of money, and was last seen running toward Freshwater Road.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Soon after the lunchtime robbery, officers with the criminal investigation, forensic identification, patrol services, and the police dog service of the RNC were at the site.

They visited surrounding businesses, took statements and looked for possible surveillance footage.

The bank was closed for the remainder of the day but the foyer was unlocked for ATM access by mid-afternoon.

Bank robbery sounds so big city impressive. Until you read it was a BMO branch on Elizabeth Avenue.

I really found it funny how the woman who owns Sharington's was all smiles on the news last night, almost like she's proud to be the owner of the store next to the bank robbery. Seems like she should have been more concerned that it could have been her business that was robbed.

Oh well, free advertising I guess.

Edit: As an aside I also used to live just behind that bank on Gambier Street.

Gas bar employee foils masked bandit

A masked thief tried to hold up a gas bar and convenience store in St. John's late Monday night, but did not get far.

Someone wearing a mask entered the Ultramar station on Freshwater Road shortly before midnight.

The person was carrying a weapon, but the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary did not identify it.

An employee on duty confronted the would-be robber, who ran away without taking anything.

The RNC used a police dog in an attempt to track down the suspect.

No one was injured during the incident.

Armed standoff comes to end

UPDATE:

An armed standoff between police and a man barricaded in a house on Springdale Street has come to a peaceful end more than eight hours after it began.

On Saturday at approximately 9:00 p.m., RNC officers discovered an armed and barricaded male while in the area of Springdale Street on another investigation. The RNC were in the area responding to an armed robbery at a convenience store in the downtown area of St. John’s. The suspect of the robbery was a lone male. There were no injuries involved in the robbery. The Criminal Investigation Division, RNC Forensic Identification Section, and K-9 Unit all responded to the scene. An undisclosed amount of money was taken. The RNC says a description of the weapon used and a description of the suspect will be released at a later date.

On the scene of the standoff shortly after, RNC Media Relations officer Const. Talia Murphy said the two incidents appeared to be connected but was unable to give any further details. Whether the two are absolutely connected has not been established at this point.

Several RNC units including Crisis Negotiators and the Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) attended the scene and contained the area of the standoff.

The RNC Crisis Negotiators established and maintained communication with the armed 21 year-old man for more than six hours and at approximately 5:15 a.m., the RNC Tactics and Rescue Unit used tactical maneuvres to apprehend the armed man without incident. The male was immediately taken into custody. The 21 year old male has been arrested and charged with pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, breaches of court order and three warrants of arrest.

The male will appear in St. John’s Provincial Court this morning. The investigation is still on going at this time.

Earlier story:

Police were still at the scene of an armed standoff as of 5:30 a.m. on Springdale Street. The standoff began Saturday evening at around nine o’clock as police were searching the area for the suspect in an armed robbery that occured at a nearby convenience store hours earlier. RNC Media Relations officer Const. Talia Murphy said the two incidents appear to be connected but was unable to give any further details.

A section of Springdale Street is cordoned off and the RNC Tactics and Rescue unit is on the scene with armed officers deployed in front of a house at the corner of Springdale and Gilbert Streets. Several officers can be seen in full tactical gear and carrying assault rifles which were at times pointed at the house. At least two negotiators are on the scene as well and were speaking to a man through a second story window. The man could be heard alternately speaking to and yelling at officers. He was also be seen through the window brandishing what appeared to be a shotgun and held it under his chin at least once. Early this morning he started shouting to police “Shoot me, shoot me, why don’t you f---ing shoot me?”

Shortly before five o’clock this morning, after the man stopped communicating with police, the tactical unit approached the house and used what appeared to be a telescopic camera to peer into a front window. Another group of officers waited at a side door with a battering ram. Minutes later they all retreated from the yard.

Residents in the area have been asked to stay in their homes but some people closer to the disturbance left their homes voluntarily while others have been prevented from returning home until the situation can be resolved.
More information will be released as it becomes available.

Alleged Bar Stabbing in St. John's

Police are investigating what appears to be a stabbing that happened at a bar on George Street. RNC say the 33-year-old man was in hospital already seeking treatment for serious but non-life threatening injuries when they were notified. They say the incident happened between 3:00 and 3:30 Friday morning. Police say his injuries are consistent with that of a knife or sharp object at a bar. The man has since been released from hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or has information is asked to call RNC or Crime Stoppers.

Gunshots Fired in Kenmount Terrace

Some very anxious moments for residents of a St John's neighbourhood overnight, when a series of gunshots rang out, shattering the quiet of midnight. Police say the shots were fired from a moving vehicle, grey or silver, possibly a Honda Civic, on Dauntless Street in the Kenmount Terrace area, shortly before midnight. It only took a moment, but when it was over several parked vehicles and one residence had been damaged, but there were no injuries. Owners of the damaged home had just returned from vacation and officials say they have no known connections that would lead to such targeting.

RNC say at this time, it appears to be a random act and they have recovered the firearm believed used in the attacks. There are no arrests yet and police haven't released any further details except to ask anyone with information on the shootings to contact RNC or Crime Stoppers.

Well this is crazy. Seems they used not just an AK style semi-auto, but sprayed the house with a fully automatic weapon..? Yikes.

AK-47 used in drive-by at St. John's subdivision
CBC News Posted: Jun 3, 2013 11:04 AM NT Last Updated: Jun 3, 2013 11:03 AM NT

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has been investigating a shooting at the Kenmount Terrace subdivision in St. John's.

Kenmount Terrace residents nervous after Friday's gunshotsCBC News has learned that Friday night's shooting on an otherwise quiet street in a new St. John's subdivision was the result of a feud between rival drug dealers.

Sources said an AK-47 assault rifle was used to spray a home with bullets.

But sources also say the shooter stopped at the wrong house, and that the people who live there are not connected to the drug trade nor to the feuding dealers.

Police are also investigating possible links to mainland biker gangs.

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Chief Robert Johnston was scheduled Monday to reveal details about the RNC's investigation into the shooting on Dauntless Street, a street in the Kenmount Terrace subdivision.

Even worse, they sprayed the wrong house. If you're going to be a part of the thug life you may as well try and do it right.

It seems as if people have made a connection between this and the Hamilton Ave. firebombing. Meaning the police must have some idea of their suspects, especially if they can make a connection to drug dealer rivalry/gang activity.

Eight shots fired? I say slap 'em with 8 counts of attempted murder. At the very least one charge of attempted murder. One doesn't shoot without knowing the consequences, which is especially true when you shoot with no regard for anyone's safety. But the RNC will probably just charge with reckless discharge of a firearm and assault.

I have a feeling that the Hells Angels and Bacchus aren't going to have a friendly relationship.

RNC investigating Hells Angels connection to shooting, car fire

The chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says a Friday night drive-by shooting and a car fire the night before may be connected to drug crime in the city.

The shooting happened on Dauntless Street in the St. John's subdivision of Kenmount Terrace. Chief Robert Johnston said two homes and three vehicles were damaged, but no one was injured.

One of those homes was targeted, but Johnston said the perpetrators targeted the wrong house.

The car fire happened overnight Thursday on Hamilton Avenue, causing extensive damage to the vehicle and the exterior of the home.

Johnston said police believe both incidents are connected to efforts by the Hells Angels to get established in St. John's.

He said the RNC is using violence suppression tactics following Friday's incident.

The weapon recovered on Friday is an assault weapon, but Johnston declined to offer further details about what type it is.

Police believe a silver or grey vehicle may have been involved in the shooting.

Right now it's only speculation that the weapon was fully automatic. I surely hope it wasn't... do not want those things, or the hard core thugs that usually come with them, on our streets. I have a friend (not a thug!) with a full auto AK47, it is one scary weapon.
