New "old" highrises. Or "30s highrises" built in the XXI Century!

Hi, I am wondering if this happens in your city. In Brazil, the so called "neo classical" architectural movement is very strong. Highrises build now looking like if they were built 70 years ago.

Let me give you some examples from São Paulo

the one on the left, in Porto Alegre

there are many others, but I want to see such in other parts of the world, not only show the brazilian ones...

Those aren't too bad... Not really that good, but not too bad for something like that. I kinda like the first two.

those look like nice materials were used.

the one on the left was built recently (1999?) in Atlanta...it looks worse in person, some cheapass materials.

9 times out of 10 these don't come close to looking as good as the originals... cheap materials, lack of detailing, giant air intakes and garage doors at street level, you name it.

I know... sometimes I feel like most historicist architecture is designed by a secret committee of establishment modernists to bolster their case for rejecting the past.

The last one in the OP looks good, and the first one would be better with a stronger cornice and some decorative panels on the horizontal parts between windows (PS- what do you call those? Mullions? It's embarassing that I don't know)

that one with the multiple towers is hideous, but the others i like. I support this movement to creat more "old-fashioned" skyscrapers, but i think it has to be done very carefully.

There should be a ban on these atrosities! Modern architecture is not about reinventing the past. Especially the 1920s/30s! Please! At least Chicago is not following this route (with the exception of one notable building under const).

it seems many modern architects do believe in endlessly recreating the 30s; bauhaus etc. especially.

close but not quite - the common case, at least around California, is that many architects are all about modernism and don't know how to properly design a classical building, while the client or zoning board wants something historical. Thus a lot of the finer details get lost.

For example, note how the real historic building has 3 windows in each bay, giving it symmetry while centering the eye on a window rather than a blank wall, the way the even-number windowed modern knockoffs do.

Bollocks. There's plenty. What about the ones that recently spurt up near Lake Shore Drive and Water Tower Place? What about the mirror Reliance Building north of Block 37?

I don't mind it so long as it's done right and with good materials. Unfortunately, 1930's materials and skilled labour drive prices way up, so it's rare to see any neo classical buildings done right.

And to think one hundred years ago Louis Sullivan thought the 1893 World's Fair was a setback to architectural progress...

I stand corrected. When I first responded to this the Elysian popped into mind as the only major current building, but there have been others in the recent past. Seems the Columbian Exposition wasn't the only setback....

^the stupid base of this building will be a mall for rich people. And the towers will be for millionaires. Millionaires with bad taste, of course, who spend to show off to other millionaires...

In the SSC brazilian forum we were saying how we wished the construction company would get bankrupt for not selling it and stuff... and a few weeks later, they had already sold out all the units in two of the towers.

It hasn't happened yet, but it might soon.

This is proposed and approved for Las Vegas.

It will go here, near the southwest corner of the beltway, ten miles from downtown.
