Ottawa Contributes Funding For Energy Projects In Saint John

https://www.country94.ca/2020/03/04/...ergy-projects/

Quote:
The federal government committed up to 4 million dollars in funding for energy projects involving the City of Saint John and Saint John Energy. The Municipal Deep Energy Retrofit Project involves implementing energy efficiency measures at up to 50 buildings. Samir Yammine, manager of asset and energy management for the city, says the project will help them reach greenhouse gas targets by 2025.

“We are looking at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, the City Market, Saint John Transit, the police headquarters, water facilities, everything,” Yammine said. Speaking in the Market Square Atrium, Yammine described the geothermal project which involves using water from the harbour for heating and cooling. “Use the harbour as a geothermal to be able to use it to heat and cool this building as efficiently as we can. Ten times as efficiently as other buildings conventionally. Also, to make a provision to connect any future development on the Fundy Quay which could be up to 1,000,000 square feet.” Yammine said. He called it a very exciting project.

“We [will] try to start this project as small as we can and hopefully by 2030, we’ll have up to 20 or 30 buildings. By 2030, we hope to have a full-scale project,” Yammine said.

The federal government also announced up to $570,600 in funding for Saint John Energy to replace around 1700 existing lights with high-efficiency LED lights.
This work will begin in the summer months and take about a year to complete. The lights being replaced are being rented for use in commercial settings such as apartment buildings, driveways and parking lots. Ryan Mitchell, vice-president of Saint John Energy, said there is a lot of change and innovation in their sector.

“As a utility, having a sustainable electricity brand designation, we feel it’s very important. Our customers have told us it’s a concern for them to look at how their energy supply impacts the environment. We continue to weigh that heavily against the economic attributes and investment we would make. We have been trying to identify projects that have both an environmental and economic benefit attached to them and then look to lean forward with those initiatives,” Mitchell said.

The funding announced by Saint John-Rothesay member of parliament Wayne Long on Wednesday morning in Saint John, N.B.
It comes through the Government of Canada’s low carbon economy fund.

Yes I agree, both interesting reads. Strength within our regional energy sector & diversity of offerings to consumers will set us apart in attracting new investors to our area.

Don Darling will not be seeking re-election on May 11.

With this news, I see someone currently on Council who'll throw their hat into this ring. And it's a she.

Mayor Darling has been an incredible leader for the city of Saint John. I’m sadden by his decision and I wish him all the best.

Here's a couple photos I took on March 23, so it was a day or two before your photo. Also spelled Millidgeville wrong, but not re-uploading them

With world economies shutting down and people not driving nearly what they were, oil refineries across the world are being impacted by the fallout from covid-19. Closures in India, Europe and now Newfoundland with storage capacity running out everywhere.

What does this do to the IOL refinery?

Here is one thing they are doing at the lube plant:

"Irving Oil Ltd. has retooled its blending and packaging plant in Saint John to add hand sanitizer to the production line.

"We're all in this together," said a Facebook message from the company. "As we look to support the essential needs of our communities, we have retooled our blending and packaging facility in Saint John, NB, to add hand sanitizer to the production line."

Irving Oil did not respond to repeated attempts to get more information on Tuesday afternoon.

In response to a question on Twitter about whether additional people would be hired to produce the sanitizer, the company responded, "Our existing workforce is working on this project."

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister's Office released a statement that said Irving Oil was one of several Canadian companies "stepping up to fight the COVID-19 pandemic."

Premier Blaine Higgs commended the company — and others — for stepping up.

At the government's daily news briefing on Tuesday, Higgs said there are "a couple of companies ramping up to do that," while others are refitting operations to make gowns and other needed medical supplies.

"The more that we can make locally — and provide locally — certainly the quicker access we have," said Higgs. "

Really great to see more residence capacity added to campus. UNBSJ sorely lacks residence culture and activities on campus so hopefully having more people living on campus will lead to a more all-around university experience.

It would be really great to see expansion at UNBSJ. A new residence is a step in the right direction. I hope there are plans for future growth.

Noticed two new applications have been submitted.
New strip plaza across from Lancaster Mall. There’s currently an advertisement for a new A&W on this site.

Nice find!
This new development appears to be part of Lancaster Mall, since the same owner included this new strip mall as part of the mall's site plan. Looks like it will be roughly 8,800sqft. with potential for 2 drive thru units. I would assume A&W will be one of the drive thru units they're referring to?

Here are the next slate of public hearings to be scheduled for the summer - of note is the Taylor Avenue proposal for a new multi-unit development in the Crescent Valley neighbourhood. The hearing for the new SJ Energy substation on Paradise Row (to free up the Smythe Street substation lands for development) has also been rescheduled to August.

Development activity remains strong in Saint John through the early stages of COVID-19 recovery

Quote:
The City of Saint John is pleased to release an update on recent development activity, which has continued to steadily increase since the re-opening of the City’s One Stop Development Shop at the end of March.

“Overall, we are seeing higher than expected levels of activity and developer confidence in Saint John,” said Jacqueline Hamilton, Commissioner of Growth and Community Development. “This is positive news for the City as we work through COVID-19 community and economic recovery plans.”

Building permit construction activity was up for the week of May 19, with 25 permits valued at $1.3 million dollars of construction activity approved. The week of May 18 -22 marked the first time since the reopening of the One Stop Development Shop that the volume of permits exceeded last year’s results. While the overall value of construction activity remains lower than this time last year, it is more in line with activity typically seen in April; a potential indicator that the 2020 season is slower to start, as expected.

Development activity in the pipeline remains strong, with 32 permits valued at $6 million currently in the queue for the One Stop Development Shop to process. While the large majority of applications are being processed virtually, some customers have opted to schedule in-person appointments with staff.

Last week the City’s Planning Advisory Committee green lit seven projects at its first virtual meeting. Four of these projects were for new residential projects representing nearly 180 units. Some of these applications will be considered by Council at the upcoming virtual public hearing scheduled for June 15.
