Thanks for the info.

Are there any races for kids? I've got 8 and 11-year olds who are interested but all I can find is a U15 race that's probably too intense.

Also, for the open MTB-allowed races are there any restrictions? I wouldn't mind giving it a try but probably on a flat-bar road bike.

I would check. With Red Bike
Usually see one or 2 MTBs in the Novice or citizens. I think the races coming up at Argyll will have kids races. They have had them in the past.

If you want to try it out, Weds are CX race nights at either Capilano Park or Goldbar park. cost is $5. Last night was at Capilano, so next week will be at Goldbar

Thanks. where do I find information on the wed. nights? I'm going to try to get down on the weekend as a spectator. All this east end stuff is really close, I can ride down without wearing myself out.

http://www.albertabicycle.ab.ca/midweek-racing

Just under 180 were out last night.
3 divisions.
A - are the elite and expert M & W
B - expert and Sport M&W
C - novice and some masters M&W

A do 6 laps and the rest do 5 or when ever the lead A group rides finish 6. I should be doing 5 but end up doing 4 because the A group blow past everyone else.

There will be a beer tent both days at the science park so should be fun both days. Even more fun if there is mud. Then the real skilled riders are fun to watch.

i assume that's for the poor signage and land configurations that lead to this?

Negative, they were well aware that they were parked in the bike lane.

Unfortunately the picture is too blurry to read the licence plates. You could have submitted to law enforcement if they were readable.

Look at all those cyclists who are on the sidewalk because of it... outrageous!

In all seriousness, ticket and tow them. I may not be a fan of the bike lanes, but I'm much less of a fan of anyone blatantly ignoring the rules especially with such hubris.

You could write a book based on Edmonton's experience on how NOT to build bike lanes LOL

It could be volume 2. Volume 1 would be how not to build a rapid transit system

Sorry, what exactly is wrong with the bike lanes?

Not extending the grid through all of downtown (thanks to construction, mostly) isn't so great. West of 103 is pretty good all-around.

First & foremost, physical design of the lanes. I am seeing those concrete curbs being knocked around and broken all the time. Just like the poorly done 108st streetscape, they used inappropriate materials to make them, especially for a city like Edmonton that has heavy equipment clearing snow and substandard drivers that like to run into things. # 2 is the signage. My lord why so much signage ? Whos' getting the kickback from ATS for all these signs.. it's crazy. Finally the routing. Some of it is pretty good. Some of it is terrible. It's still a disjointed network of dead ends and strange intersections. The fact that they did things like remove the drop off zone at city hall to accommodate the bike lane says all I need to hear about how well the network was thought out. I'm not anti-bike. I bike quite a bit in the summer, and I want to start riding to work again in the spring. But the implementation of the bike network just seems like it was done as most things are done in Edmonton... "it's good enough"

Those "poor materials" are because it's a pilot, not a major capital project.
Signage seems excessive because it's new so our drivers need to be told things that should eventually be obviously.

Most of the disjointed dead-ends are due to construction or coordination with institutions like MacEwan.

It was meant to be done quick with some of the those issues resolved in the future. It's far from perfect but I don't think there's anything about it that should be considered a planning fail.

Well I sure hope it gets better. As it sits it’s terrible, slap dash infrastructure and it’s over signaged because it’s a bad design. I wouldn’t call it a planning. fail , just not that well done.
