A Walmart Supercenter will be opening in the old Sears site in late 2016.
I like the design of this Compton Sears Hoss.

Here's another angle.

And Walmart's make-over.

It's going to retain the same basic look.

I think they should have kept the flag pole on the roof.

...and at the opposite end, the 'grid' you see in Hoss's photo is still in place.

Thanks for location the previous mystery photo Hoss. I appreciate your help.

Here's the last from the series of 1925 sepia photographs.
I previously stated there were 12 photos) -I'm not sure what happened.

Building #11

You get extra credit if you can also name/locate the warehouse that's visible down the alleyway.

The Miller Rubber Co of California was at 939 E 4th Street. The building was demolished in 1966 when it was owned by the Coca Cola Co. The building down the alley was the California Warehouse Co at 837-855 Traction Avenue.

So this is the California Warehouse (red arrow below) that's visible in the 1925 photograph, right Hoss?

I was checking to see if the water tank was still in place. (it's not)

eBay

I thought we had visited Pearl Court before, but I haven't been able find any previous mention of it on NLA.
I probably confused it with some other 'Court' since there are so many in the Los Angeles area.

I found an address in the 1929 Los Angeles City Directory.

1120 Normandie Avenue

lapl

Here's 1120 Normandie Avenue today.

gsv

aerial

google_earth

The slope in front of the apartment appears to be the about the same as in the Pearl Court postcard.

But the current courtyard apartment shown in the gsv was built in 1927, yet I found 'Pearl Court' located there in 1929.

I did notice that building, but wasn't sure if it was the one from the sepia picture.

The first CD listing for the California Warehouse Co is 1890 when they were on Lawrence Street. They moved to Traction Avenue about 25 years later, where they stayed until the late-30s.

While I was looking for information on the California Warehouse Co, I found this advert for Bekins in the 1910 CD.

LAPL

It made me wonder whether Bekins really used elephants to pull their wagons. We may have had the answer before, because there's a mention of Bekins and elephants in a 2014 post, but it featured a hotlinked image from eBay which went missing long ago. It may have been this postcard which seems to match the advert.

Very interesting Hoss.

Your post reminded me of this photograph from 1953.

I know we've seen this once before on NLA, but it's just so darn cool.

I found this matchbook the other day of eBay.

I believe this might be the same building .

Among the ringsiders I can spot Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli directly in front of Kay. To Judy's right (from our perspective) I believe that's Don DeFore. Garland served as matron of honor to DeFore's wife (singer Marion Holmes, I think that's her seated opposite Don) at their 1942 wedding, so this may have been a joint night out for the Minnellis and DeFores. Kay Thompson was Garland's vocal coach at MGM.

Andy Williams and Kay had a long running affair, despite a 20 year age difference. Kay went on to author the "Eloise" children's books, about the little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel. She moved in with her goddaughter Liza Minnelli in her final years, dying at Minnelli's NYC penthouse in 1998, age 88.

For those curious as to the Thompson/Williams Bros act here's a 1951 television performance:

I believe the man with the mustache is actually Janet Gaynor's husband, costume designer Adrian. Like Oleg Cassini, he sometimes wore a mustache and had a prominent nose. Looking at Google images of Adrian I found some with the mustache, also the shape of his head matches the gentleman at Ciro's. The fact that Janet Gaynor is seated at the table would suggest the man is Adrian.

Thanks for finding the picture of Walmart's plans for the old Sears store in Compton, e_r. I skimmed through a couple of the articles on the subject, but wasn't sure whether Walmart were using the building or just the site. Maybe they'll even keep the flagpole.

-------------

Here are some Julius Shulman photos of the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. The hospital is still there, but I couldn't match this exterior shot with Google's aerial views. It may well still be standing, but difficult to spot from the air. This is "Job 3747: Huntington Memorial Hospital (Pasadena, Calif.), 1964". NB. I've omitted the last image which just showed a ceiling with some lights.

This looks like a waiting area.

And so does this.

The cross at the front suggest that this is a chapel.

All from Getty Research Institute

The notes with the pictures above mention another photoset from four years later. I'm not sure if it's the same building, but it's the same hospital. This is "Job 4366: Pereira & Luckman, Huntington Memorial Hospital (Pasadena, Calif.), 1968". First, a reception area.

The last picture shows a private room complete with TV.

Both from Getty Research Institute

I think you're probably correct MrCory.

Earlier, I said that the gentleman in the striped tie resembled actor Jeffrey Lynn but that was really just a guess.

My problem is that neither lady strikes me as particularly resembling Jaynet Gaynor.

FW, I've been searching but I haven't located the house yet.

I thought maybe the unique roof might help, but I couldn't think of the name for that type of shingles.
Are they considered steam bent shingles?

(I thought if the house still exists, part of the description might mention the roof)

And you said the number on the tree looked like 520?

If it helps you find it, I'm probably 90% sure it, or another just like it, was south of Wilshire in the Mid-Wilshire/Miracle Mile area. I looked around just now but didn't find it again.

Here's the one in Phoenix. Is it just a common floor plan? Or did a specific person design it and build it around the country, or at least in LA and Phoenix?

"502" would generally be adjacent to Fifth Street, north of Wilshire.... I looked west of Highland (where in some places there aren't even any "500s").... I know that an architect I've run across named Lewis Kelly practiced in LA in the early '20s and then moved to Phoenix. He worked for a developer called Home Builders there, which built smaller houses.... maybe he brought his portfolio to Phoenix to recycle....

The only other person I think the lady with her hand on her chin resembles is Greer Garson.

So I googled Ms. Garson to see what her husband(s) looked like, and lo and behold her second husband, Richard Ney
bears a striking resemblance to the handsome man in the striped necktie.

http://forums.tcm.com/index.php?/top...ch-2013/page-6

could this be a possibility?*

*Hurumf....but it doesn't appear the man with the striped tie is wearing a wedding band.

There might be a ring, but it isn't on the correct finger if it's a wedding band.

So I guess we're back to square one

Thank you scanlessfool. I wasn't sure if we would figure out the location of the 1970s slide.

After taking a closer look at the bakery/liquor store building, it matches the building in your gsv.

gsv

The former bakery space is now occupied by something called the 'Evergreen Village'.

Oh, and a peaked roof has been added to the building.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I believe that man at the front table could be Mr. Ney. He was married to Garson at the date of this photo...1947.

I knew him well. I have read his several books. He wrote "The Wall Street Jungle".,..which perfectly defines the fraud of Wall Street stock trading....its all rigged.

He was handsome and elegant all his life. I used to watch his stocks investment TV show.
