The 200 mile radius presents some nice figures.

1) Borden County, Texas: 200 mile radius -> 2,337,041
2) Meagher County, Motana: 200 mile radius -> 1,058,655

3) Somerset County, New Jersey: 200 mile radius -> 50,450,333
4) Somerset County, New Jersey: 175 mile radius -> 45,342,044

5) Los Angeles County, California: 200 mile radius -> 24,548,583

6) Chicago city, Illinois: 200 mile radius - > 25,489,822

Did 500 mile radius from my county. Took screen shot. Crazy that almost 1/3 of country lives in this area.

I agree. Most of that area is either uninhabited steep mountainous terrain or empty desert lands. Blythe is not "L.A.", however the urbanized I.E. is metro L.A.

Metrolink serves many parts of the I.E. for crying out loud.

Anything more than 50 miles or so (I would say less, even) is beyond the distance of commutability and isn't really contribute anything to a city.

Philadelphia is probably the one exception here, as it's 50mi radius no doubt bleeds into NYC's NJ suburbs. Still, it does reflect it's potential commuter shed and media market to draw upon though.

I just set a 50 mile radius from San Clemente the southern most city in Orange County.
Results: 17,934,577

*It should include San Diego County, but it does not. Like many other methods, this too is flawed. It seems to break it up by county. Places with smaller sized counties have a better and more accurate count. Western states with huge counties do not.

Raleigh is 2,661,684 in a 50 mile radius. That is pretty much the Raleigh-Cary metro and the Durham-Chapel Hill metro combined statistical area. Charlotte's is slightly larger at 2,924,191.

50 miles radius of Greensboro includes all of the Triad of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point and comes it at 1,988,681.

For my town of Shrewsbury in Central England there are 7,011,121 people in a 50-mile radius.

Go up to a 100-mile radius and it moves up to 26,294,637

At 200-mile radius it's 60,448,811

At 500-mile radius it's 159,424,118

The village of Hartington in rural Derbyshire in central England has a population of 15,443,389 within a 50-mile radius. More than Los Angeles!

I'm surprised Dallas is bigger than DC, considering the DC CSA is bigger and that Baltimore and most of its suburbs are within the 50 mile radius.

Anyway this website doesn't work for me. I can put in a city and move the slider, but I don't get any results.

Wouldn't the Chesapeake, points east in MD and the Delmarva peninsula to the skew its numbers lower?

Even more impressive is Columbus, Ohio. If you look at a 500 mile radius, some place in Ohio like Columbus captures most of America's population...nearly 140 million, almost half (1/2) of the nation's population.

It includes many of America's biggest metros within that 500 radius (5 mil plus):

New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Atlanta, Detroit.

And others: Baltimore, St. Louis, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, etc.

I'll do one better than that:

Houston (@ 7,917 miles): 7,666,554,115.

Cool tool. I used to find the 20 largest city populations / all those above 15 million: (as measured from the centre of a metro's core city - you can get higher numbers for some of them by cheating the location a bit or using a smaller neighbouring city/suburb)

1. Dhaka 39,154,270
2. Kolkata 37,617,390
3. Tokyo 36,432,460
4. Delhi 33,976,750
5. Guangzhou 33,032,860
6. Shenzen 30,460,010
7. Jakarta 29,237,610
8. Cairo 27,018,100
9. Mexico City 24,434,680
10. Manila 24,433,970
11. Seoul 24,206,030
12. Sao Paulo 22,905,830
13. Shanghai 22,006,430
14. Mumbai 21,780,630
15. Osaka 19,556,730
16. Beijing 19,327,910
17. New York 18,535,350
18. Chengdu 17,468,350
19. Moscow 16,765,900
20. London 15,749,280

Interesting how it compares to the list of the world's largest metro areas as defined by their local statistics agencies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._by_population

Not sure how accurate it is though - I was getting less than half the stated metro populations for cities like Karachi and Lagos, so I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from.

The population figures seem to be outdated, at least it seemed that way when I used it on Toronto and got a population of 7,279,897 within a 50 mile radius, although the 2016 census population of the inner core of the Golden Horseshoe (which is completely within the 50 mile radius) was 7,826,367. Including Guelph, the portions of Waterloo Region, Simcoe County, and the parts of Western New York that are also included within that radius, (as well as almost 3 years of population growth), and it would certainly be more in the range of 8.5 million now.

I noticed some major discrepancies too. I think the data is old.
