That is one sweet looking tower! Fingers crossed that the finished product ends up like this rendering.

Love the view. That glass wall will look great from Discovery Green.

I am guessing the crown puts this in the 420 foot range.

HOUSTON | Marriott Marquis Convention Center Hotel | FT | ? FLOORS

Documents were executed with Houston-based Rida Development Corp., which will build the 1,000-room hotel, a Marriott Marquis just west of the George R. Brown Convention Center. The city approved the project late last year.

“With this agreement, Rida can now begin work in earnest,” Mayor Annise Parker said in a statement. “It’s an exciting project that will help increase our convention business and generate more activity in downtown Houston.”

Financing for the $335 million project will come in part from Houston First, which operates the city’s arts and convention business. The agency is providing funds to buy the hotel site, build an adjacent parking garage and make other “related improvements” around the convention center.

Officials expect the hotel to be completed in 2016. Houston First said it will soon issue a request for qualifications for a garage developer.

Love the design, but realize now part of the reason why I do. They took the core frame and shape of the Austin JW Marriott under construction and changed the facade and some other elements.

Pretty clever, pretty clever. Honestly, if them re-using the same basic floor plan gets Austin and Houston both better designed buildings, I am all for it. The original Austin Marriott renders were horrible before they changed the design.

The project doesn't even begin until mid-2014. As for the height, I think the latest render is all we have to go by.

Contractor selected for Houston's second convention hotel
Emily Wilkinson - Print Editor - Houston Business Journal

Rida Development Corp. has selected a joint venture contractor for Houston's newest convention hotel, which it is developing downtown.

Dallas-based Balfour Beatty Construction and Florida-based Welbro Building Corp. will construct the $335 million, 1,000-room Marriott Marquis. Balfour Beatty Construction is a subsidiary of London-based Balfour Beatty Plc.

The 30-story hotel will be one block north of Discovery Green near the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Preconstruction of the project will be ongoing throughout the remainder of the year and groundbreaking is anticipated in the first quarter.

The selection of Balfour Beatty gives this project a bit more legitimacy. Still a Q1 2014 start planned.

Having funding and an operator always helps get a hotel project started.

The other recent proposals for residences and hotels in the area is going to make for a nice little cluster next to the ballpark.

Marriott Marquis to break ground in April

Posted on February 5, 2014 | By Nancy Sarnoff

Downtown’s new 1,000-room convention center hotel will break ground April 11, the developer and city announced Wednesday.

The Marriott Marquis Houston will be built across from the George R. Brown Convention Center, connected by a pedestrian skybridge. It is scheduled to open in 2016.

“One of the key drivers in this entire process is the 2017 Super Bowl,” Dawn Ullrich, president and CEO of Houston First, said in a statement. ”It’s everyone’s intention to have the new Marriott Marquis open for business when the big game rolls into town in three years, as we did 10 years ago when the Hilton opened in December 2003 and we hosted the Super Bowl in January 2004.”

The project is being developed by RIDA Development Corp. and Houston First Corp., which operates the convention center and owns the Hilton Americas.

The project will get a boost by a recently announced plan to reshape the east side of downtown.

The Chronicle’s David Kaplan wrote this about the project last month:

Quote:
Representatives of Houston First Corp. are proposing to transform the area around the George R. Brown Convention Center into a landscaped and more walkable pedestrian-friendly city center, with more retail and less car traffic, in time for the city to host the NFL’s marquee game three years from now.

Where cars and buses now dominate the area, there would be rows of trees and tables for sipping wine and snacking on tapas.

The project, which has yet to be formally approved, would involve opening up the center’s look by replacing the front walls with paned glass that allows dramatic views; adding restaurant and retail space and shaded places for people to sit at ground level; and reducing Avenida de las Americas that runs in front to three lanes from eight.

That space currently used by cars and buses would become a landscaped pedestrian area with a row of trees and tables for sidewalk dining.

That and the apartment tower nearby are going to start to fill in that area near the Brown.
