975 Meter Superscraper In Miami Could Steal Dubai's Crown

20. JAN, 2010

Plans have been floated for a new superscraper in Miami that could steal the world’s tallest crown from Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

Despite Miami’s financial woes, having a reported 100,000 plus properties in foreclosure according to the Miami Herald, Kobi Karp has submitted designs for Miapolis - a ‘city within a city’ planned for Watson Island.

The 160 storey building would be more than 183 metres higher than the Burj Khalifa if built and would house an amusement park, observatory, restaurants, 1.96 million sq ft of shops, over 1000 apartments, 1 million sq ft office space and a 792 room hotel.

The project has been around for more than a decade but it is reported that developer Guillermo Socarras has been in talks with the Federal Aviation Administration to secure approval for the height of the tower.

The project is currently looking for funding from investors.

I'm still undecided on Burj Khalifa, but I still think it's light years ahead of this.

Tbh I'm disappointed the west can't come up with a better design. This is really, really bad.

bhhhhaaaa, in this one case i hope the FAA is able to enforce it's height restrictions. That thing is awful. I'm sure the chance of it getting built are slim however.

holy eye-sore batman. if the US ever goes this tall, i hope we can come up with something better and more deserving than that pile. the base is just awful; what a nonsensical, disorganized, mish-mash.

^^^ I agree, I feel like people just can't figure out how to design aesthetically pleasing ultratalls. I mean there was a huge change in design theory when we first started designing highrises (good old Louie Sullivan and his base, shaft, and cornice theory) and then another change when we started designing Supertalls, adding necessary flow and gradually changing details from the bottom to the top. But I just haven't seen a cohesive plan for a building in the neighborhood of 2500' yet. In fact, the tallest design I've seen that "works" and doesn't look forced in some way is the Chicago Spire and that really just uses the same tricks that were used by supertalls all along. You have a well detailed building that starts with an interesting base and gradually tapers to a point as it gets taller. So that doesn't even really count as an effective ultratall design.

I can't wait to see a 3000' building that "works" because I have no idea how it will look.

More of a vision/fantasy than a real proposal. For one the guy doesn't even own the land that he is proposing this on. Plus the FAA has a 1049 foot cap on Downtown Miami due to its proximity to the airport. Will never happen (thank god).

And the FAA still has a 2,000 foot cap throughout the whole country, if i'm correct.

Not to mention the fact that the McCarthur causeway which runs through the island is a major hurricane evacuation route for the residents of Miami Beach. This will never happen.

This is a myth. There is no cap. There is only the assumption that there is probably no good reason to build anything above 2000ft that will unecessarily intrude into the airspace. Thus the FAA and FCC have a policy of not issuing permits to build above 2000' unless the applicant presents a good arguement as to why they should be allowed to build so high. There is no cap or law preventing it.

In other words the only thing that happens at 2000' is that the developer now has the burden of proof to show that there is a need for a 2000' structure that outweighs the disadvantage of the intrusion on the airspace.

Not really. Like you said, it's looking for financial support.
