Saskatoon & Winnipeg to Launch Joint bid for World Juniors

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskat...-bid-1.3820987

Just announced today. They haven't announced which games will go to each city but one would assume Winnipeg will get Canada's games and the Final since it is the bigger city with the nicer arena. I'd be interested in why the cities decided to go with a joint bid instead of going alone; neither city needs the other.

Saskatoon last hosted in 2010 and Winnipeg hasn't hosted since 1999, so I'd say they have as good of a shot as any other cities in Canada. The last two times Saskatoon has hosted it has led to some renos of Sask Place, so maybe we'll see some more improvements if Saskatoon wins?

Thoughts?

^ Aren't Montreal and Toronto co-hosts this year? 2x the cities is 2x the fanbases to tap into. It won't be like the last time Winnipeg hosted, when a lot of the lesser games were played in rural communities.

lawless tweeted Saskatoon would get Canada for round robin and Winnipeg would get the medal rounds. But of course nothing is confirmed as far as I know.

Yes, the Saskatoon/Winnipeg bid would be for 2019. Lawless reported the other bids are Vancouver/Victoria, Edmonton/Calgary and somewhere from the East Coast.

Pretty much the case. Discussed between periods on the Lawless and Order segment on TSN during last nights game..Also the rumor the NHL draft could be held here somewhere around 2020-2021....pending a possible lock out season//labour dispute looming on the horizon..

We can finally be made whole for the 1995 draft or whichever one it was we lost when the team moved away!

I heard last night that Windsor/London are also bidding.

Windsor/London would be too small to host, their arenas are less than 9000 seats making it the smallest bid to host World Juniors in Canada in a quarter century. In that same time the cost for hosting has gone up by >10x since the 1990's.

I could see SaskTel Centre adding the remaining 1000 seats in a renovation to make capacity >16,000 for the tournament.

Winnipeg and Saskatoon being co-hosts seems a bit odd to me. Has the bar gone up for hosting the World Juniors since Saskatoon and Regina were co-hosts in 2010?

WJHC is big business these days. The Sask/Regina bid may have been the only option, or the best option presented, at the time. Part of the bid is saying "we will profit XX millions of dollars". Basically whomever has the highest profit will get the tourney. That really limits small towns. That's why lately its been big cities with big arenas.

If we're going by who will make the most money, Calgary and Edmonton have already won. I'd be afraid of the prices they'd charge to see a game at Rogers Place.
