Too late, at least for Winnipeg. It has been privatized for years.

Oh shit. Sorry my SSP radar has been off the last couple days.. I don't care who picks up my garbage. City or private contractor. Whatever the cheapest solution is would be best. But the City bunged that one up with the latest round of private contractors.

I thought it would be one guy coming around in the truck with the automated arms. But pretty sure for recycling there is still 3 guys doing it manually. They put the bin on the back of the truck and the machine dumps it. The garbage bins, I think, are being done by the one guy truck with telescopic arm to pick up the bin.

We have a lot more in common now than we thought, I would have taken that bet as well if I had any insider info it would have happened..

Here in Regina, the city picks up all the residential garbage and recycling. (brown bins for garbage, blue bins for recycling) Trucks with telescoping arms and all that stuff. Private firm pick up business garbage.

I think prior to going full on with the latest contractor, the City was still picking up garbage in some areas. But not 100% on that. Like I said, whatever's cheapest is best.. Since we're in the Manitoba Election thread, there are many towns that do their own garbage.

Yeah I know that, in my angry response I forgot to add the "what part don't you get" to the obviously stoned poster! You are correct on garbage pickup though, some areas of the city had private garbage pickup for decades prior while parts of the city still had publicly run garbage pickup with city staff and all that came with that (ridiculous pensions, shorter routes, more workers off on leave, unions, .....)

You forgot to answer the rest of the Pallister stuff about Being Anti gay. Anti Any other religion but his. And all the infrastructure cuts. But I imagine your land on the gay subject is you probably don't like gays since you seem so anti everything.

Maybe a nice hot cup of soup for you and a few lorazepam!

Even though the NDP won only 12 seats in 1988 as opposed to 14 this time, they were in a much better position geographically in 1988, with Dauphin, Interlake, Brandon East and all of the north (then 5 seats) to go with a much smaller complement of 4 north Winnipeg seats.

map

Reconnecting with rural and suburban voters with their new caucus of inner-city MLAs is going to be a huge challenge. Not only that, they lost the majority of their remaining MLAs with significant cabinet experience and name recognition.

A slightly milder version of the 1988 scenario would have arguably played out again had the Liberal campaign not been so terribly inept.

No question rural areas were on board the Pallister train, but there was much more reluctance inside the Perimeter. However, the lack of any other alternatives to the NDP meant that the PCs more or less automatically got the anybody-but-the-NDP vote.

I'm willing to bet that the NDP will regroup and focus a bit more on shoring up its bases for the next time out. I'd be pretty shocked if the NDP didn't regain Thompson and Kewatinook next time out.

Wow this is rich, okay I'll play along and pencil in the lines of the connect the dots picture you've painted for me, here we go, I like Pallister so obviously that makes me a homophobe, like Pallister must dislike Jews, Muslims and what Catholics, technically kind of tough do for me, like Pallister probably hate dogs, cats and children right? Go light up another fat one.....ahhhhhh, woo, woo, phhhh.....

I agree. They have basically been left as the party of the inner city. They have lost a huge chunk of not only middle class south and west Winnipeg, but middle class Winnipeg in general (east and north as well). It's these ridings and not so much Thompson and Keewatinook that the NDP need to worry about. It's transcona, Radisson, Rossmere (all ridings that have been trending Tory at the federal and provincial levels due to changing demographics).

I think the bigger struggle for the NDP in the interim is to get their fundraising machine in order. The loss of the voter subsidy is going to hit them hard, as they have relied on it heavily (the PC's don't take it). So next election, even though it's 4 years away is going to be tough for the NDP. Depending on how well or not Pallister does, we could see the NDP win back a handful of traditional ridings or witness what happened in Saskatchewan and see them lose further seats.

Chris ... let me guess ... you're running for PM of the Conservative Party?

Maybe. I tend to think that the Interlakes and Dauphins of this world might be gone forever, just like the party now barely registers in its former stronghold of Lac du Bonnet. The old Slavic/Icelander/Francophone rural base that the NDP used to draw from seems to have realigned with the rest of rural Manitoba.
