I still get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error message when I try to access the page from home. At school it works fine, so the problem's clearly in my computer.

I've tried the Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts-thing already, but it didn't work. I remember changing it the last time, but when I looked at it now, the line was gone. What could the problem be?

Perhaps, but this sounds like a movie that they would show in the filmhouse type cinema in my city and that place has good seating and no intermission too.

The thing is, we have one big cinema which has crappy seating and intermissions and another multiscreen cinema with equally crappy seating (and intermissions too). The filmhouse type cinema is the only good place, but they don't show all movies.
They are building a new multiscreen cinema in the city center and the big multiplex on the edge of town is still a go too (but I wonder when the hell they are going to start building!) Untill then driving 30 minutes to Antwerp to the big multiplex there is the best option if you want to see a movie decently.

Looks like all the thread-headers pages are already buffered (AFAIR Jan/someone told about such feature to accelerate some database-killing actions).
Of course I can be wrong and the problem may be just with a table keeping our posts' content

This really fucking sucks and is starting to get on nerves. SSC is down and this site is running at snail-pace (worse than SSC ever was) because of the spillover from there to here. Once SSC is back up we should either enable manual registration and split the job up between loads of mods, or else limit registration to a certain amount a day. That'll help keep things in control

Update from the temporary admin -

"It's running FreeBSD, and the FreeBSD kernel is the problem. Whoever installed the system installed a 32 bit kernel, and it's 32bit counterpart programs on a 64 bit system. The problem is that it doesn't see the extra 2GB of RAM in the database server.

Also, FreeBSD sets a 512MB memory usage limit per running program. This means that there's 3.5GB of ram just being wasted, while MySQL tries to run on 512MB It's a huge part of the slowdown issue. When the forum gets 2000 people online at once, page loads can take 60 seconds or so.

I'm waiting on the datacenter to set up a second database server for me, We're going to throw Gentoo on there (Best. Distro. Ever.) and run the database off of it while we format the main DB server and put Gentoo on there too.

By the time I'm done, The site will run with 3000 users like it does with 300..."

GNU, so they are doing it. Optimization, shifting to new OS, installing new server etc. And what are other forums? There are no much forums around the world where average number of users online is 2000-2500. Big grow needs more hardware and much well optimized software. This is what is going now - installing new hardware, optimizing and installing new software.

When reading this "Most users ever online was 55,206 on Mon Sep 11, 2006 6:20 pm" or this post count from "Reds098" : 103,883 whatever...

What is happening at SSC isn't really a good thing , it is certainly going to keep lots of people away. You can have a problem which should be fixed within a couple of days but the way its going on now is becoming hilarious.
Certainly nothing to be proud of!
