To that I say: SOL
yep. everyone is okay with TIF's being handed out to big boy developers, but if the city just used that money to build subsidized housing, everyone would be losing their shit.

it's like how elon musk and jeff bezos have gotten rich off of publicly financed research and grants. socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor.

to you as well, could a non-profit government entity not do this better and at a cheaper price? it makes no sense from an economic point of view to have housing as a commodity and I have yet to see a good defence of it.

also, it's a little rich to complain about people being mean to someone who at least had the finances to invest in a project like that, while our city is in the midst of a full blown meth crisis, poverty rates are continually increasing, young women are being trafficked into the sex trade, our infrastructure is crumbling, and most households have skyrocketing levels of debt. but none of those things are "mean", just conveniently ignored in all the discussions of shiny new buildings going downtown.

I'm not even sure Winnipeg is home to a billionaire anymore. The Izzy Asper was the only one I knew of but that ended badly.

I bumped into and met Hartley recently so I guess you could say I am essentially a billionaire too.....you know, now that we run in the same circle of friends.

I used to be wealthier than Donald Trump.

Granted, that was back when Trump was deeply in debt.

La Sainte Guillotine! Let's just send all the 1 percenters to the guillotine. I mean, they don't know how to spend their money properly, the government should seize their assets and dispatch them swiftly. Successful people ought to be punished for their competence, which has no place in the utopia that will surely follow.

the defining characteristic of Monopoly Capitalism is that there's too much money at the top, so the biggest problem for capital is finding places to productively absorb it. That's why we have billionaires "inventing" public transit, Juicero, and space travel dilettantes
from drjokazooie

from an interview with Bezos:

totally normal society. not like we have any problems on the earth to solve, the billionaires are just plotting their getaway plan as climate change destroys the earth. these are you "successful" capitalists, we should definitely not be telling them how to spend or make their money!!!

how jezz bezos and other people actually get rich:https://medium.com/@parismarx/jeff-b...n-d3d5245a6e1b

Space travel might ultimately resolve a lot of the problems we have on earth.

ya can't wait for a couple of ghouls to spend billions of dollars racing their space rockets to mars, that will help re-distribute wealth and save the environment from climate change

I'm sorry but your anger is misdirected here...

You might feel less hostility after working at the food bank for a day.

Happiness is usually measured and felt in what you do for others.

If your angry at rich people it usually means your just not doing enough for others yourself to bring happiness into your heart.

Any yes Happy May Day...
