was at the pint this weekend and never took notice to this mural before.

Pretty ingenious how it incorporated the windows and how it spanned over 2 buildings.

^ It's too bad the St. Regis didn't maintain that original facade shown on the mural... then we'd be talking about preservation instead of demolition. Sadly, the 1950s attempt to modernize that building ended up shortening its life considerably.

I wish we would see more awnings, as I think they make the streetscapes more inviting.

Awnings do a great job of taking a blank space and making it feel part of the attached establishment without adding fences/barriers seen at some patios. And it's not as offensive for passers by to just sit down either.

Parlour Coffee on Main is a prime example where awnings would help.

The problem with awnings is they need to be maintained and actually need to be opened when it isn't winter. Seen some examples of badly torn or closed awnings in Winnipeg not that long ago. I think it was on Notre Dame near Smith St.

Is it just a question of our winds making them impractical? Awnings are a common sight around the world, but for whatever reason they're very uncommon here.

Can't say I've seen many in Toronto either. They obviously make interiors dark and aren't needed in any practical sense in an era of air conditioning. They used to have them on the windows of skyscrapers like the Union Bank and the Confederation Building as well. Those places would have been sweltering in the summer heat. I remember how stuffy the Union Bank got during the summer I worked there, although it would have been air conditioned by then.
