My grandparents bought their house for a couple of thousand bucks in 1951, an ordinary postwar bungalow in Briar Hill, an area that was, at the time, on the edge of town. Now it's considered inner city, right next to a train station, coveted by young families, and the house is worth $700,000.

$700,000 for the lot, and the house will get torn down!

Of course. Many of the other houses in the area have been town down for townhouses or mini-mansions.

It's actually kind of a shame that the city's zoning laws prevent more density. it would be such an easy neighbourhood to densify if you allowed developers to tear down bungalows to build small apartment buildings. There's even a tiny retail strip nearby that died in the 1990s because nobody shopped on foot anymore. With more density it could be revived.

Sorry for the thread resurrection...

Does anyone remember what ever happened to the Homes by Avi project that these NIMBYs were making such a big stink about?

There seems to be something similar happening in Winnipeg and I can't remember what happened to the NIMBYs here.

I'm not entirely sure what happened, but nothing is happening on the site now. I don't think anything will be happening either, at least in the near future.

To me, it's completely mind boggling... you couldn't pay me enough to live under those massive transmission lines and that patch of sketchy grass is far from a park. If someone wanted to come along, burry the lines and build what would surely be million-dollar townhomes, I would help them in any way I could.

Instead, these houses maintain a lower than average value for the area, back onto an increasingly busy road, with no buffer for sound, because the "park" is nothing but an unsightly brown field... atleast they can be comforted by the soothing hum from the power lines

I forgot about this thread. Here we are in 2010 already, the boom is done and we hope the bust is done too.


Please post your comments on and images of the various kinds and styles of housing available in Calgary and area; and whatever else is relevant like vacation homes of Calgarians perhaps.

Roxboro mansion under construction on the Elbow River. This is one of the most unique houses being built in Calgary. The structure is steel. I can't wait for the wrap to come off!

At first glance, I thought this was a school being built! There is more of the house on the right I couldn't quite fit in the shot.

Cumberland House:

This is the view from my balcony. There are 4 condo apartment buildings on the Rideau Place cul de sac: Renfrew House, Cumberland, Rutland, and Devonshire.
They were built in the mid 50s using lift slab technology which has probably never been tried in Canada since.
The parking garages are under the lawn.
In the late 70s, about 20 townhouses were built on the cul de sac and together with the apartments constitute the Rideau Ridge community.
A hair salon in the alley is the only retail. There are 2 outdoor swimming pools, one for the townhouses and one for the apartments. They won't share.
