So what percentage of refugees and other immigrants are collecting welfare are you attesting to. Or is this just an assumption on your part that many do leach off the system.

Some of these immigrants and refugees have better education than some people here and are willing to take jobs that most Canadians look down on.

Some interesting stats Katz through out at the State of the City speech.

According to him, Winnipeg has grown by 18,000 in each of the last two years.

What is Katz looking at that Stats Canada is not?

Immigration is necessary; we need to ensure educated, skilled people leaving are replaced by equals.

Thunder Bay has had trouble keeping immigrants. The city works hard to attract doctors and scientists from other countries to come to Canada, but once the come here, they are met with so much racism that they can't bear to stay in the city, so they move to other places. This has been a serious concern in the city, and it is something that the community doesn't really see like the racism against aboriginal people, which is often very apparent.

It's good to see Winnipeg pass 3/4 of a million. I hope it can get up to one million sometime not too far in the future!!

Not sure how to show a pdf file on here, so you will have to click this to get info on the CMA Stats for Winnipeg.

I read somewhere they were at approx. 13,500. That would make them tied with Thompson for #3 in Manitoba. Don't take this as gospel, but the top ten cities/towns in Manitoba ( as of 2010) are as follows:

1. Winnipeg (683,200)
2. Brandon (46,487)
3t.Steinbach (13,500)
3t.Thompson (13,500)
5. Portage la Prairie (12,700)
6. Winkler (10,000)
7. Selkirk (9,500)
8. Dauphin (7,900)
9. Morden (6,800)
10.The Pas (5,700)

I know I'm in the extreme minority, but I still consider Selkirk to be Winnipeg's northern-most suburb (not in a disrespectful way, I really like Selkirk).

I thought with with Mitchell,Blumenort,Kleefeld, Steinbach would be easily over 20,000 people.

We are talking cities/towns, not amalgamation. Those towns are independent of Steinbach, so there is no reason to include them in the population of Steinbach.

Jets4life...sorry if i mistook that information
Mitchell / Kleefeld and Blumenort are not even incorperated, they all belong to RM of Hanover. Mitchell is , and should be part of Steinbach...think Sherwood Park to Edmonton for a comparison (just smaller numbers). All these communities are dependent on Steinbach. IMO

Smiley..
I don't know if Brandon will pass GF. Brandon is still to much tied to gov't jobs, even with Maple Leaf and Koch growing there is still not enough private investment..
What's your take on GF, I'm there a couple times a week and I'm impressed how they have recovered from "The Flood".

This might take awhile, but I'm thinking that as a result of SW Manitoba's ever expanding oil/petroleum industry which is booming, Brandon will experience a very decent population and economic growth as SW Manitoba's hub city. I think Brandon at least catching up to GF or even passing it populationwise is totally possible.

Brandon's 2006 Census population is 48,000.

Grand Fork's 2009 population is just over 51,000; its metro population over 97,000.

I was referring to city proper populations, not inclusive of metro populations.

On CJOB right now they are talking population and said that we (Manitoba) just hit 1,243,000. We had the best immigration levels since 1943, just under 17,000. They estimated Winnipeg gets 70% of the immigrants. South central Manitoba Morden-Winkler-Altona is the 2nd fastest growing region in Canada.
