At least they tried something other than a box. And if it helped kickstart the South Loop skyline, I'll take it. But it is a very visible reminder of maybe our country's lamest architectural era ~the mid 2000s

Preliminary iterations of OMP had more vertical separation between the various set backs, and thus had more elegant massing, but the developer wanted to maximize unit square footage at the top and so we ended up with the clunktacular mess that we got.

It wouldn't have been nearly as severe of an architectural crime if it wasn't located in such a freaking prominent spot, made all the more apparent now by NEMA's far more graceful tapering profile.

Am I the only one that doesn't hate OMP? It's nice from some angles but a bit awkwardly proportioned.

I hope someone builds something cool on Crescent Height's site. This area has a lot of potential.

I mean sometimes I kind of like it in a it's so bad it's good kind of way, but mostly it looks tacky.

I don't necessarily hate OMP.

But I don't know how anyone could look at its massing and not conclude that it's pretty fucking clumsy and awkward.

I think it's safe to assume that individuals on this forum only have complaints regarding the building.

I like OMP. As Toasty said at least they took some risks and tried something other than a beige concrete box which where ubiquitous during that time period. As Steely said the original massing had more separation in the setback near the top creating a more elongated and elegant effect. What we have now is awkward especially from certain angles but I think looks decent from others. I like the attempt at a fine crown even if it wasn't pulled off perfectly. I like the strong verticality of the central portion and how the designers break up the mass using different colors of glass and vertical and horizontal expression. You can see how they attempted to hold the corner but didn't quite pull it off right. Overall I like it but it isn't great.

I'm from Raleigh. Please, please can we have OMP. It would be the best building in town. Tallest by 200 feet and most attractive by a broad margin.

That is not a complement of this building in any way. It is extremely awkward. It is just head and shoulders above anything we have here. Severe case of skyline poverty.

I've always thought that OMP would look so much better if it had an extra 100 ft in height. I recall the original renderings back in the mid 00s had much more graceful proportions, but as Steely said the developer got greedy and we ended up with an awkward building that looks short and clunky despite being a 700 footer.

Not really if it's an external link associated with someone's account.

Inline images encoded in base64 up to the forum character limit might be the only other way - but I'm not sure if SSP is configured to do that. Maybe someone here knows.

I gotta say, now that this is finished, I really love it. I was initially bummed when the other version got axed, but I much prefer what we ended up with. The taller version would be oppressively massive at this spot and would have (disrespectfully) overwhelmed the surrounding area and would have been too much of a spectacle.

The building as finished is elegant and sophisticated and has an idiosyncrasy about it that is both puzzling and alluring.
